How To Use
- When you receive your KwikMaths kit, you will notice
that there are sized for A4 in a portrait format. There are 2 on a sheet
(each A5 sized). You now need to simply print the the cards using a PC
and Printer. It is advisable to use a laser printer as this will save
ink!
- You may wish to print directly onto card at this point.
- Alternatively you may wish to enlarge the cards to A3,
using a photocopier. This will allow you to make the cards more easily
visible, but may reduce the amount you can display. It is advisable to
try one of each and view from the back of your classroom. It will also
depend on the size and arrangement of your classroom. You may also want
to consider the age of your children.
- Once you have the printed versions, they are now ready
for laminating.
- After laminating, they are ready for use. To mount
on the wall simply use pins, or adhesive such as Blu-tak. Alternatively,
you may wish to use a hole punch and hang them on cup hooks. This allows you
to easily change the cards over at regular intervals.
- Remember to use an Overhead Transparency Pen (or
similar) as these tend to wipe off easier than dry wipe pens!
By working this way we can keep the cost of
our product low and allow you to easily update your collection via e-mail!
Points to Remember:
- alternate the cards regularly- there are more than 150
currently! This will keep the challenge fresh!
- start with easier cards to get them going.
- end with cards which are more open-ended.
- match the cards to work in your Numeracy lessons-
reinforce, consolidate, reintroduce, recap...
- ask the children to set themselves daily targets- write
them down. Challenge them to beat them- PRAISE!
- give the children a separate book to work in.
- run through the answers quickly, target children for
answers, let them mark their own.
- select two or three to focus on each day.
- ask children for their calculation strategies, etc.
- address misconceptions immediately (if possible)
- give a clear deadline to finish working.
- allow/encourage them to work collaboratively in pairs or
with parents!
- allocate 'jobs' to children (especially older ones)- two
pupils could clean them during play, only a five minute job- but five minutes
is five minutes!
- differentiate the cards by using simpler/more complex
numbers, operations, vocabulary, etc.
Remember-
The cards are limited only by your imagination to apply
numbers, operations, etc to them. Even the simplest of the cards, used
with 5/6 year olds can be modified for much older children by using negative,
squared, cubed numbers or even algebraic representations!
Orthodoxy is the graveyard of innovation!
