The Tar Tanker is based on a wagon built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & wagon Co. in 1864.The 7 1/4” version is designed to carry extra water to feed the injectors of standard gauge tank engines. This wagon is not designed to ride on although the running gear is of similar design as the ride on wagons. The frames consist of two 5mm laser cut frames strengthened by steel angle on the inside. The outside of the frames and the buffer beams are clad with wood. Dummy brake gear is fitted to the Right hand side.
The wagon is fitted with sprung buffers, sprung 3 link coupling hooks and ball races in the axle boxes.
The ‘ D’ shaped tank is constructed from 1mm copper and of soft soldered construction A screwed filler cap is fitted on the tank top and an outlet with valve fitted in the base, a 1.5m length of plastic 6.3mm bore pipe is supplied. The tank holds 15 litres.
The wagon can be purchased as a finished item built to order. Castings and all parts are available separately.
All turning work can be accomplished on a Myford ML7 or similar size lathe.
Drawings are imperial, but the assembly shows metric fasteners. Flat bar & angles are black mild steel except for Buffer beams and brake drop arms which are bright mild steel.
