Every November on Remembrance Day the Nation remembers the fallen of two World Wars and other conflicts. Poppy wreaths are laid at War Memorials across the land, the Last Post is sounded, church services are held and a two minute silence observed. Yet for many the memory of losing a loved one, a colleague, a friend, or of their own part in war, is each day renewed by the keepsakes they have in their homes.Within this website are items that could tell some remarkable tales but also there are others that serve as reminders of loved ones killed fighting in the 20th Century's two World Wars. Some, like wartime personal diaries, have been deliberately left out, while other objects for inclusion could not be found, such as a table lamp made from a WW2 incendiary bomb. This item came into existence during 1941 when a fireman returning home discovered the bomb laying unexploded in the road near a railway line. Thinking its shape would make a good table lamp he carried it home and dismantled it in a bucket of water. Much to his family's alarm he didn't blow himself or them up, and some days later, complete with electrical wiring and lamp, it was gracing a room in his home. To all those who lent items for this website, and memories of days gone by, the most grateful of thanks.
