PRE-SEASON FIXTURES

Sunday 4th September Well done to everyone who took part in this mini-tournament in testing conditions on a full size pitch. It took a while for us to find our feet and we probably saved our best football for the second half of our last game. A good work out which tested our fitness levels and proved that there is room for improvement and also in our attitude and approach to matches. But, that is why we play these pre-season games so lets take as much from this as we can. WELL DONE, now lets press on.

Sunday 11th September

Friendly versus Invicta U12s Spitfires, result  3-3.

A useful workout before next week's opening league fixture with Biggin Hill. Although physically stronger and running the match for periods, we never put the result out of the Spitfires' reach, with the equalizer coming with the last kick of the game. Two goals for Clayton surely made his day and a defence splitting pass from Jason putting Leo in on goal and slipping the ball past the oncoming keeper.

It was through lack of concentration that we let Spitfires back in, three defenders taking on one attacker and with a bit of luck, the attacker got through and scored. Not picking up the loose ball and communicating with each other, let Spitfires in again with two forwards almost fighting each other for the chance to score, no defense to contend with! The last coming from our inability to clear a run-of-the-mill throw in, the ball going right across our area before a bit of a scramble and a goal.

There were lots of positives to take from today's match, strong play from Joe L., Jason, Leo and Logan gave the team a good platform and with time they will have the confidence to bring others into the game. Good reading of the game at the back by Ben G. who showed true determination at times, attacking the ball, not waiting. Loosing Ben W. early wasn't part of the plan, but strong running from Lewis and Clayton, with Clayton bagging two goals, will only improve their confidence. Chris was reading the game well at full back, just needs to show a little more grit and attack the ball. Joe B. and Jay showed good reading of the game to win the ball, but at times rushed their next phase of play. Again, small points that we can note now and improve on for next week. Matt was brave as always in goal and with his keepers' training day next Saturday, his confidence will be sky high for our first match.

Well done everyone, let's show a positive attitude at training on Friday in preparation for Sunday.

Match Reports 2005-2006

4th May 2006 Trophy Cup Final against Epsom Eagles   Result  2-1 (W)

The Under 13s rounded off their successful season with a Cup Final victory against Epsom Eagles. The match, played at Chipstead FC under floodlights saw Invicta raise their game as they battled from first to last whistle to narrowly see off the possible league winners.

Every member of the squad has played their part in getting Invicta through to this Final and the success is very much deserved. The match was a tense affair, played in good spirit by two teams that like to play the game in the right manner. The sides matched each other in their commitment, endeavour and passion, with some good football on show.

Epsom tested Invicta right from the start, but found their opponents hard to break down, but when they made a way into a scoring position, they found Matt in fine form to deny them. Invicta started to make inroads themselves as the game balanced out and then, took the lead from a Jason free-kick, awarded after Ben G had been fouled just outside the area. The supporters erupted and Epsom knew they had a game on their hands.

Chances were at a premium, but when they came, both keepers showed their class to deny any further goals and the half finished, with Invicta leading 1-0.

It was difficult to calm the team down at the interval, the adrenaline was pumping, but a few chosen words and a reflective moment they emerged for the second half.

The half had barely got going before Jason got his, and Invicta's, second goal, the crowd erupted again and the noise was deafening. Back came Epsom, with Malcolm (No.7) leading the way and spurring his team on. Time after time he took on the Invicta midfield and defence, sometimes it was the fourth or fifth challenge that finally denied him, what an asset he is. Epsom scored shortly after and from then on, it was Invicta playing deeper and deeper, trying to hold onto their lead. The game became condensed into Invicta's half, but when they did break, Sean and Joe L. were totally out-numbered.

But, as has been the way this season, Invicta are made of stern stuff. The determination they showed in the last fifteen minutes, the effort  they put in, the dogged passion not to concede, saw them home and when the whistle went, early by my count, each and every player shouted with joy. The crowd  (Invicta's extra man) were elated and the team basked in their achievement, job done!

However, a game needs two teams, and Kevin has put together a formidable team in Epsom, who as we have seen twice this season, can beat any team on their day. Our thanks must go to Kevin and each of his players for the part they played in making this a memorable occasion, Epsom's day will come, but the 4th May 2006 was Invicta's.

I made mistakes on the night by not fielding all our players and for that I apologize. In our first ever Final that was tense and very tight, I found it difficult to make changes that could have given the edge back to Epsom and deny us our moment. The whole squad have played their part this season, maybe some more than others, but 3rd in the League and Cup success is surely more than any of us could have hoped for.

My thanks to everyone this season in making it one to remember.

WELL DONE THE UNDER 13s

2nd April 2006 League Home to Epsom Eagles  Result  1-2 (L)

Our last league match of the season and once we had cleared the goal mouths of last night's rain, the teams only had the blustery wind to contend with.

Both sides were below strength and Invicta deployed Ben W at centre-back to make use of his pace and he produced a Man of the Match performance.

The early exchanges were fairly even, Epsom looking to use the quick forward at every opportunity, Invicta using the wings to good effect. An Epsom handball on Invicta's left, gave Epsom's defence an early test, a corner shortly after saw Gary head just over. This was followed shortly after by another corner that Jason sent to the back post, where Joe L forced the ball home under pressure, 1-0.

Back came Epsom, winning the first ball in midfield and testing Invicta's defence, Chris and Lewis tackling hard and Gary stepping out to quell any attack, with Ben W sweeping up anything that got through. Matt was coming off his line at speed to help the defence and made a couple of fine saves. At the other end, Jay was unlucky not to extend Invicta's lead with a long range strike that went left of the upright. Joe L fired over from range shortly after, but it was a missed tackle at the back that saw Epsom level,1-1, and despite close efforts at both ends, the half finished 1-1.

The second half saw Invicta with the wind blowing hard into their faces and Epsom in a determined mood. They certainly were having the bulk of the early exchanges and when they broke down their left, Invicta missed three tackles and Epsom took the lead, 1-2. Invicta responded by using Joe L on the right more and more. He had the beating of the full-back, giving him shots on goal and at worst he was winning corners. Jason was swinging the corners in, right under the cross bar and Invicta did go close, but the difference today was Epsom's keeper. He barely dropped a ball during the whole game and despite chances falling to Sean, Leo, Jason and Joe L, Epsom stood firm and kept Invicta out. With moments left on the clock, another corner forced by Joe L saw Jason swing over yet another corner, the ball fell to Ben G six yards out, his effort was blocked and the ball fell to Gary, his effort was blocked as well and it just wasn't to be, the whistle blew, 1-2.

This was another determined performance from Invicta and their first defeat since mid December. The team's faces showed how much this mattered to them, but the game proved that we are no pushovers and will certainly be a match for Epsom when we meet them in the Final on 4th May.

So, the final table reads, played 20, won 13, drew 2 and lost 5. This is by far our best league performance and when you think that three of the defeats were by a single goal, it shows just how much the team has improved. Add to this our first ever final is still to come, this certainly has been a memorable season. Well done boys and thanks to all the supporters that have braved all the conditions this season.

Man of the Match   Ben Washford    Special Mention   Matt Brown

Goal scorer    Joe Lamb.

26th March 2006 League Away to Biggin Hill   Result  2-4 (W)

Against a much improved Biggin Hill side who's league position doesn't tell the true picture of their abilities and commitment, we kicked off a little late on a pitch that had seen a lot of rain overnight that made it heavy along one side.

Biggin Hill started the brighter, pushing the ball around nicely and forcing the play. Always first to the ball, they showed their intent from the off and put Invicta on the back foot. Using a long throw to good effect down their left, Biggin Hill put a great deal of pressure on Invicta's goal.

Invicta responded, winning a couple of free-kicks that saw Ben G and Gary have shots on goal. But after ten minutes, Invicta failed to play the offside and Biggin Hill took the lead. They dominated the next few minutes of play but when Invicta won another free-kick in centre midfield, Logan fired the ball into the area and an own goal leveled the score.

With Biggin Hill looking to use the pace of their forwards, Matt had to be on his toes to claim the through balls. This then gave him the opportunities to launch some long kicks up field that Ben W was keenly contesting. Joe L. was using the space down the right to test the fullback, forcing the defence to double-up on him to reduce his threat. So, a well contested first half came to an end with the score 1-1, but Biggin Hill edging the game.

Asking for more commitment in the second half, Invicta started well, but were coming up against a packed midfield that were hunting in numbers to deny any space. Sean went close with a header and Chris put in a great cross that unsettled the defence. Matt pulled off another double save from a corner to keep it level and then when Ben G won the ball in midfield, he fed Logan who threaded the ball forward for Joe L to run onto. Joe then rounded the keeper at pace and slotted home, 1-2.

Back came Biggin Hill who continued to show their steel, Matt had to make a number of saves and Logan and Gary had to be on their guard. Both teams were using the wings to good effect, Joe L on our right and Leo and Jason on the left, with Biggin Hill doing the same, the fullbacks were in the thick of it. An attack from Biggin Hill down the left saw a great cross come over and despite another double save from Matt, the goal-mouth melee saw the teams level, 2-2.

Both teams pushed on and another Biggin Hill corner saw Gary head clear and the follow up shot go wide. At the other end, Invicta won a corner that was taken short, then Jason crossed and Ben W headed over. Another break by Ben W saw him beat the defender for pace, round the keeper who had forced him wide, only to see his shot cleared off the line. Matt was then called on to save well in a one-on-one with the forward, he has kept us in the last two games with great saves.

Another Invicta break down the left forced a corner, this time Jason swung it straight into the box where Gary rose unchallenged to head home, 2-3. The final goal came when the ref awarded Invicta a freekick after he adjudged Sean to have been fouled as he chased after what was probably a lost cause. Jason floated the kick right into the six-yard box and in the confusion, Joe L forced the ball home, 2-4.

This was a really great game to watch with both sets of supporters being thoroughly entertained. Biggin Hill played some classy football whilst showing some true grit, similar in a way to what Invicta have been doing to other sides this season. A little more thought is needed in our positioning and a little more commitment in the tackle, get these right and unsettle the opposition, then we are a match for any team in this division.

Man of the Match     Joe Lamb     Special Mention   Gary Ferguson

Scorers - Joe Lamb 2, Gary 1, own goal 1.

19th March 2006 League Away to Redhill   Result  2-4 (W)

A bright and fresh morning welcomed us to Redhill, the pitch was on the small side and very undulating which made it hard for both teams to get the ball under control.

Playing with the slope and the wind behind, Invicta started brightly and forced a couple of early corners. Both teams were struggling with the conditions and Redhill then began to edge the game. Invicta weren't clearing their lines well or pushing out when they did clear. This lead to Redhill's first goal, the back four weren't working as a unit and played the forwards onside when a ball was played over the top. 1-0.

It became a tense and even match from then on, Invicta using the long ball, but it wasn't working too well as the wind was blowing the ball too far forwards and into the keeper's grasp. Still, we did push on, especially down the right, where Joe L. was testing the full back regularly. Joe L set up a chance for Gary that went over, Logan went close after a strong run, but the equalizer came after a short corner was worked to the edge of the Redhill box, where Sean hit a rocket, 1-1, half-time.

Asking the team to start winning the first ball, we began the second half with a bit more determination. Our cause wasn't helped by the ref as when Matt saved a good Redhill effort, turning it aside and then off a Redhill player for a goal kick, as flagged by the linesman. No, said the ref, corner given, swung in and not cleared, 2-1!

Feeling hard done by, Invicta began to stir, Jason going on a good run and Ben W going close. But then another decision went against us when Redhill's forward ran onto a through ball. Matt came out bravely and was first to the ball at the forward's feet, the forward's momentum took him over Matt and down, where he stayed. Penalty said the ref!!! Protests all around and words to Matt from the ref! A strange decision and even stranger action from the ref, if it was a foul by Matt then as last man he could have seen yellow if not red. But, no card and a penalty! Maybe it was justice, but Matt pulled off a fantastic double save to deny Redhill their third goal which probably would have secured them win.

So, 2-1 down and back came Invicta. Ben G, Ben W and Jason were beginning to win the first balls in the centre of midfield. This gave us the chance to keep possession and force Redhill back. Some intelligent passes through the channels of the back four were putting Redhill on the back foot. An angled ball from Ben G over the defence and into the right full-back position, saw Sean force a corner. Jason swung over the corner and Gary rose highest to level the scores and continue his scoring habbit. 2-2.

With Ben W being replaced by Clayton, Invicta still pushed on. Breaks were still coming at both ends, seeing some desperate defending. Matt was putting everything into his drop kicks, into the strong wind, to clear the lines. More Invicta pressure after a break down our left, saw the ball ping-ing around the goal mouth, shots and saves, shots and deflections, but finally Sean forced the ball in despite a valliant attempt by Redhill's inspired keeper to keep the ball out. 2-3.The fourth goal came from Joe L after he connected with a cross from the left, coming it at the back post, the ball went over Clayton and Joe pounced. 2-4.

Still time for a couple of scares, but Invicta dug deep and secured what at times seemed like an unlikely win. Two league games left, Biggin Hill away and Epsom at home. This has been our best season, let's enjoy it to the end.

Man of the Match  Matt Brown    Special Mention   Ben Greehy

Scorers -   Sean 2, Gary 1, Joe L. 1.

12th March 2006 League Away to Oxted & District B  Result  1-5 (W)

Away to the much improved Oxted side that somehow sit at the bottom of the table. The noon kick-off became 12.15 before we got underway and for a change Invicta started brightly, forcing Oxted back and the early chances came to Sean and Jason as they tried to convert long balls from Gary. Further efforts from Clayton and Ben W within the first fifteen minutes showed our intent, but Oxted are no push-overs and within a minute of Gary hitting his own crossbar, an Oxted corner was scrambled home and Invicta were 1-0 down.

But in true fashion Invicta bounced back, a cross-shot from Jason was fumbled by the keeper and Clayton scored, 1-1. Two further efforts were saved by Oxted's talented keeper before Gary converted Jason's corner on thirty minutes, 1-2. Before the break, Sean made it 1-3 as he finished calmly from Gary's free-kick.

The second half was full of chances at both ends, Sean went close again from Jay's cross and then after some approach work between Jason and Leo, the keeper saved Sean's attempt. With nine minutes of the half gone, Ben G pushed up from defence and fed Jason who finished coolly to make it 1-4. Again Invicta made chances, but the keeper was in fine form to deny us. Matt was also called on a few times in the half to keep Oxted out, punching clear on one occasion and with the help of Lewis and Ben G, kept Oxted's tally to one. Jason got his second after Sean flicked on a quick throw in and the game ended 1-5.

At times we played some good passing football and created numerous scoring opportunities, but early on we were a bit cagey especially against Oxted's bigger players. The second half saw Invicta more determined in the tackles and this was the difference that kept our opponents out. Gary had another blinding game, as did Jay in the centre of the midfield. Ben W never stopped running and both Clayton and Joe B got into the game quickly, despite their recent lack of match practice.

Some complacency crept into to a few players towards the end that took the gloss of the performance, but a win is a win and that's what we need to set a total for others to chase. Away to Redhill this weekend will prove to be an altogether tougher match, one I hope we are ready for.

Man of the March   Jay Woodrow  Special Mention  Joe Blake

Scorers - Jason 2, Clayton 1, Sean 1, Gary 1.

26th February 2006 Trophy Home to St Matthew's Project   Result  6-3 (W)

On a bitterly cold and blustery day with snow in the air, we took on our North Division opponents in the Trophy semi-final. With a large number of supporters to cheer the teams on, both sides produced some great football to warm the support and take their minds off the cold.

Playing 4-5-1 on the smaller pitch seems to help us as we try and close the opposition down and stifle their play. St. Matthew's had some skillful and quick players who put Invicta on the back foot early on, giving our defence a testing start. Chris and Logan were in the thick of it from the start as the left of our defence was probed. St Matthew's used the long throws to good effect, launching them into the area. It wasn't a surprise when Invicta went one down, the pacey attack avoiding some light tackles.

But, Invicta are made of sterner stuff these days and were soon looking to get back into the game. The central midfield of Ben G., Jay and Jason were closing down and disrupting the opponents, not giving them time on the ball. They hassled and hassled and when they won possession, they moved the ball quickly, varying the play out wide and then up to Sean at centre forward. The pressure told when Jason leveled the score with his almost trademark lob-shot of the keeper. Invicta nearly took the lead when Joe L. rattled the crossbar with a long ranged effort, the rebound was smothered by the keeper. A break by Joe L. down the right saw him feed the ball to Ben G. outside the area, he knocked the ball into the area and when the ball came back out to Leo, he slotted the ball home, 2-1. Jason added the third with another well taken goal, but St Matthew's didn't give up and when probably their best player, No. 14, picked up the ball in Invicta's midfield, he eluded five tackles the unleashed a rapier shot into the top corner, the half ended 3-2.

Invicta were in confident mood at the break, but with work still to be done, the instruction was to keep tight on their midfield, hassle and harry them and then move the ball at speed.

The second half saw Invicta with the bulk of the possession, St Matthew's left to attack on the break. Again our back four were strong and the midfield were everywhere. Joe L and Leo were testing the fullbacks at will and with Ben W upfront in place of Sean, he ran at them relentlessly. When Ben G. took one too many knocks, Clayton replaced him in midfield and carried on where Ben had left off. Further goals came from Gary, 2, one a flicked header from a Jason free-kick and Jason completing his hat-trick after running on to Clayton's through ball. St Matthew's scored again after a miss-kick was adjudged to be a back pass. From the resulting free-kick, the shot just evaded Matt and nestled into the corner.

So the game ended 6-3 and the supporters and players were jubilant. Another team performance with some great football has seen Invicta through to their first final. So, put Thursday 4th May in your diaries, an evening match with details to follow. Well done to everyone, players, families and friends.....what a day!

Man of the Match   Ben Greehy     Special Mention   Jason Carver

Scorers - Jason 3, Gary 2 and Leo 1.

P.s. Thanks to everyone for their time and efforts in putting on the food and drinks after the match. St Matthew's, manager and supporters were over the moon with this, the first time anyone had done this for them. The final "Three Cheers" to both teams in the Clubhouse was a nice moment. Thanks again.

19th February 2006 League Home to Orpington B  Result 8-1 (W)

Playing at Swanmead again, it took Invicta a while to settle on the bigger pitch and get into any sort of rhythm, as Orpington started the more determined.

Jay and Ben G started to get a grip in midfield and release Leo and Jason on the left. Joe L. was always willing to stretch Orpington on the right, but wasn't seeing enough of the ball. Gary and Logan were reading the game well from central defence, Gary stepping forward to stem any central runs and Logan using his pace to tidy up any breaks over the fullbacks.

Ben W. started as the lone forward and ran his socks off, chasing and closing down any loose ball and although Orpington had a couple of chances, it was Invicta who came closest before finally taking the lead after 27 minutes through Jason.

Asking the team to show a little more determination and to get their passing going, rather than rely on the long ball, was the half time message.  Now playing with Sean up front and Ben W. taking Ben G's place in midfield, Invicta started strongly, doubling the lead early in the half. The confidence began to flow and soon Invicta were breaking down both flanks, Joe L. beating the fullback at ease, but felled again and again but the covering defender.

Two goals from Gary, both from corners, one a header, saw Invicta ease further ahead. Getting caught offside numerous times was a little disappointing, but it was the eagerness to add to the score that was the reason. Further goals from Ben W, his second was really well taken as he sped through the defence. Sean added one and Jason finished off his hat-trick with yet another cool finish.

Matt was bored in goal and begged to come out, he managed to get up for the last corner of the game. It is a sign of the improving defence that Matt has little to do. Gary was named Man of the Match, not just for his two goals, but his fine defensive display. Chris R. got a special mention at full back, again for his effort and strong tackling.

So, a fine result, but a little more urgency and determination from the start will keep the Manager happy. Four league games left, one home and three away, plus next week's semi-final, weather permitting! Let's get what we can from these league matches, put the points on the board and leave it to the others to beat us. As for the semi-final, well, it's a first for us, let's give our best and enjoy the occasion.

Man of the Match   Gary Ferguson   Special Mention  Chris Rowland

Scorers: Jason (3), Ben W. (2), Gary (2) and Sean 1.

Many thanks to Paul Shipley for ref-ing today and to Colin for running the line again.

12th February 2006 League Home to Hamsey B  Result  6-2 (W)

On a bitterly cold and wet morning, it was back to League action against Hamsey B who had players missing through illness and injury as did Invicta.

Hamsey started with ten players and took the game to Invicta, forcing the play through their right wing. Invicta were slow to get going and didn't find their rhythm until after Hamsey had taken the lead on ten minutes. But when they did get the passing game going, they cut through Hamsey and Sean swept the ball home to level. More Invicta play, this time down the right through Joe Lamb and Logan forced a number of corners, with Clayton heading just over. Invicta pressed on and when a hand ball shout was ignored, Leo was brought down in the area, got up and converted the penalty himself. 2-1 at the break.

The second half began with Logan and Jay disrupting the midfield, then dictating the play, pushing Invicta forward. Leo was always looking to run at the Hamsey defence, as was Joe and the right, forcing the defence to double up on them to keep them out. Clayton was using his throw to good effect on the left, as was Gary on the right, helping to clear the lines. Invicta's back four stood firm with both fullbacks having to work hard to keep Hamsey at bay. Gary and Ben G. in the middle were reading the game well, stepping forward to pick off the passes and start Invicta's attacking play.

Second half goals from Logan's left foot, Leo and two more from Sean completed the Invicta scoring. Ben W replaced Jay in midfield, then Jay replaced Leo who took a big blow to his leg. Still chances came our way, Logan had a number of attempts and Gary headed over from a corner.

Making a last positional switch, Chris took the goalies jumper, Sean went to fullback and birthday boy Matt, went upfront. It was as if the team tried to set Matt up for a goal and his persistent running almost gave him the chance, but it wasn't to be. Maybe another time!

Hamsey pulled another goal back after some slack play, a well taken shot, but the game finished and a well deserved win for Invicta. Slow to start but dominant in the end. Let's put the points on the board and make the others chase them. WELL DONE.

Man of the Match  Sean Miller    Special Mention  Matt Brown

Scorers  Sean 3, Leo 2, Logan 1.

5th February 2006 Qtr Final Trophy Home to Hamsey C  Result 4-1 (W)

Our first quarter final appearance and the team goes from strength to strength with this win over higher placed league opposition.

Invicta played 4-5-1 in an attempt to stifle their strong and determined opposition, but they started so well that it was Invicta that nearly opened the scoring after three minutes as Ben G muscled his way through the midfield and sent a looping shot goal bound. It just went over, but their intent was there for all to see.

Never letting Hamsey settle on the ball, Invicta pressed and on twelve minutes, Logan hassled the midfield, won the ball and put a pass through for Jason to run onto. Jason didn't break stride and lobbed the keeper, 1-0. The game settled down and with Hamsey trying to use the pace of their forward line, the defence had to stay alert, tackle hard and play the offside. When this didn't work, Matt was quick off his line to keep them out.

Invicta were playing some good passing football, stretching Hamsey down the left and right, forcing a number of corners. Sean was forced to come off with an injury and Ben W replaced him upfront. Still Invicta harried and pressed and when Ben G won the ball in midfield, he fed the ball left to Leo who went on one of his runs. Skinning the fullback, Leo pushed on into the area and shot across the keeper, 2-0, how we all cheered!

Half-time and 2-0 up, the confidence was flowing, but Hamsey are no mugs and there was still work to be done. The message was to press, tackle and tackle again.

Starting the second half with the sun behind them, Invicta took the kick-off and Gary thumped a high ball straight up the middle. Ben W chased after it, between the centre backs and as the ball bounced he steadied himself, moved towards the keeper and shot. His first effort was saved but in the tangle after, he slotted the ball home, 3-0.

Hamsey were completely rattled and despite then channeling most of their play through their talented No. 11, Invicta stood firm and kept them out. More determined play in our midfield saw Jason take on the right fullback and cross, Ben W getting onto it and scoring his second, Invicta's fourth. Phew!!!!!

Further chances came and went, Sean replaced Ben G in midfield, then he went to leftback as Chris came off and Clayton came into midfield. A slip up from a defensive throw in gifted Hamsey a goal, but as the clock ticked slowly round, the job was done, 4-1 and the semi-final to come.

This was a spirited TEAM effort where everyone played a part. Strong tackling and relentless running set the platform for the victory that was totally deserved.

Man of the Match   John Holmes ( Happy Birthday )  Special Mention   Ben Washford

Scorers - Ben Washford 2, Jason Carver 1, Leo Holmes 1

22nd January 2006 2nd Round Trophy Away to Chislehurst  Result  2-4 (W)

Our first appearance in the 2nd Round of the Trophy, away to Chislehurst, second in the Central Division.

A bright and crisp morning, the match was played on a smallish pitch, which for once seemed to suit Invicta. Packing the midfield, playing 4-5-1, Invicta quickly found their stride and showed great ambition, taking the lead on three minutes when Sean attacked down the left and scored with this left foot! 0-1.

Invicta kept up the pressure, closing Chislehurst down at every opportunity, denying them time and space to get their passing going. Joe L. and Leo played as wide as they could to try and stretch the game. Ben G., Jay and Jason dominated the middle of the park, with Jason pushing on whenever he could. Jason doubled the lead after Sean held up the ball on the edge of the area, fed it out left to Jason who fired home across the keeper. 0-2.

Joe L. made it three late on in the half when he fired home from close range after the ball came right across the goal from an Invicta attack down the left. Chislehurst had had some breaks, but found the defence resolute, Gary and Logan solid in the middle and Chris and Lewis both putting in great performances. Matt was called on a couple of times, quick off his line to clear any danger. So, 0-3 at the break.

In high spirits at the break, more of the same was needed in the second half. With Ben W. on up front, he showed his speed in closing down the defence, but Chislehurst started the half brightly, linking up well and pushing Invicta back. They too began to pack the midfield and it started to tell, creating more chances, our defence had to be alert. But it was a through ball that evaded a couple of lunges, that Chislehurst's striker was quickly onto, he shot early, giving Matt no chance.

Invicta bounced back almost immediately, some good play by Jason in midfield, fed the ball through for Joe L. to race onto. Controlling the ball, he pushed into the area and fired a great shot, again across the keeper. He wheeled away in celebration. 1-4.

Bringing on two more subs, Joe B and Clayton, to replace both full-backs, both sides were looking for more goals as chances came and went. Logan tested their defence with a couple of free-kicks, but it was Chislehurst who scored again. But the outcome was decided, a good all round team effort and a deserving victory. Invicta into the next round. Well done.

15th January 2006 League Home to Horley Town FC   Result  6-5 (W)

A month since our last fixture and I think our display showed it. We didn't look too settled from the start, a few playing out of position didn't help, but despite this Invicta took the lead after three minutes, Clayton's shot was saved but Jason followed up and netted his first. Five minutes later he scored again, then some good passing through Ben G, Leo and Jason opened Horley up again. Further work on the left stretched Horley, this time Sean and Jason linking up before the ball fell to Clayton and with the keeper far out of goal, his long range shot evaded the keeper and just crossed the line, 3-0.

Sean added the fourth with a well taken shot, another goal disallowed for offside, Clayton going close again and Jason completing his first half hat-trick, saw Invicta lead 5-0 just before the break. Possible lack of concentration at the back saw Horley grab a goal with the last kick of the half, 5-1 at the break.

Although a comfortable scoreline, it did flatter Invicta's overall play, some great finishing yes, but we weren't dominating the game.

The second half began with Horley scoring almost immediately, again the back four slow to move out to play offside. Back we came, Sean caught offside, then having a shot saved by the keeper. Forcing another corner, Invicta found the side netting. A strong run from Leo into the Horley box saw him go down under the defender's challenge, penalty, converted by Jason, his fourth, 6-2.

Job done! Not quite, our shape went, our concentration and our movement. Horley scored two quick goals to make it 6-4, Jason and Sean went close again, free kicks from Logan and Jason tested the Horley defence, but back they came, lead by their captain, Marcus Budgen, to score again, 6-5. A tense final few minutes saw Invicta hold on for the win.

A thoroughly entertaining match for any neutral, a game of two halves and eleven goals, thank goodness goal difference doesn't count in the Tandridge League!

We will need a great deal more concentration and determination for next week's Trophy match, we need to hold our positions better, but when the midfield does break forward, they must get back just a quickly. So, still second in the league with a couple of results going our way, well done. Six fixtures left, lets raise our game and see how high we can finish.

18th December 2005 League Home to Palace Guard    Result 2-2 (D)

Another tough match against the well organised and determined Palace Guard team that had already defeated us 7-1 this season.

Invicta started strongly and forced their opponents back from the start, Jason going close a couple of times before Matt was called on to make the first of a number of good saves. But it was Palace that opened the scoring on thirteen minutes, Invicta losing the ball in midfield, missing a couple of tackles and the ball was in the net. We pushed on again and after Jason was fouled just outside the area, he got up and fired in the freekick that Ben G got his head too, only to see his effort go over the bar.

Ben G went off shortly after to be replaced by Chris. Chances came to both sides, Jason going close again, Logan doing everything but score and Gary defending stoutly to keep Palace out. The half ended 0-1

Asking the boys to match Palace's determination and strength and also to use both wings, Invicta looked up for the second half. Unfortunately, after just two minutes, Palace doubled their score, 0-2. Invicta raised their game in every position, the midfield started to bite, the defence strong in the tackle, Lewis showing true grit, and the forwards were chasing everything down. It paid off because after two minutes, Invicta pulled a goal back through Sean and then piled on the pressure. More play down our right, bringing Joe L more into the game and linking up with Jason and Logan, Invicta forced corner after corner. Winning more possession, Palace were pushed back and on forty five minutes, Sean grabbed his second to level the scores. 2-2.

The match was becoming a midfield battle and the tackles were coming in fast and furiously. Logan went close again, as did Sean, Matt saved again and the stoppages for injuries seemed to favour Invicta. Palace did go close again, but in the last ten minutes, Invicta had three one-on-ones with the keeper that we failed to score from, Logan hit the crossbar and it was corner after corner. But the match ended 2-2, another fine performance and another tough match. Well done to all. We stand second in the league, but have played the most number of games, if we want to end second, we need to match today's performance in the New Year in our remaining fixtures.

11th December 2005 League Away to Hamsey C    Result 2-1 (L)

Away to undefeated League leaders Hamsey C was always going to be a tough match, but Invicta probably produced their best, battling performance, to push Hamsey all the way.

A delayed kick-off due to the frozen pitches and yet again Invicta were slow to start against a determined opposition. We had to defend well and for the first ten minutes, that's all we did, but we stood firm. Hamsey attacked down both wings so Lewis and Joe B had their work cut out, but they got stuck in and with the help of Gary and Jay, restricted Hamsey to some long range efforts. Hamsey used their throw-ins to good effect again and it took a while for Invicta to get to grips with them.

The centre midfield partnership of Ben G and Logan worked tirelessly, and they had to, Ben getting his head to most balls and Logan was all over the pitch. Jason was probing down the left flank, but we must remember to use the right flank more often. Joe L is a determined wide midfielder who we don't bring into the game enough. Look up and put some angled balls over for him to run onto!

Upfront Clayton was doing his best to close down the back four and with Ben W chasing every ball, Hamsey had to be alert. Joe B was replaced by Sean after taking a crunching tackle and Sean slotted in well at full back.

Chances were few and far between but Ben W went close and after a great run by Logan that saw him go past several players, his shot unfortunately went wide. So 0-0 at the break and Invicta the happier side.

With everything to play for, the second half began, Matt was called on again to save well. Shortly after Hamsey took the lead, working the ball down their left, passing into the centre and a shot from the edge of the area was good enough to beat Matt. Hamsey upped the pressure, but Invicta are now made of sterner stuff, Ben W went close, Matt saved again, a shot from Logan and then a through ball from Ben G, saw Ben W race onto the ball and lob the keeper. Great ball and a great finish.

Back came Hamsey, down both wings, but our defence stood firm. In the end, it was a totally unstoppable shot that decided the game. From a throw-in down their right, thrown into Invicta's area, the initial ball was well headed out by Gary, but it fell to Hamsey's star player who unleashed a shot that was just perfect. It flew into the net, no chance to block or save it. 2-1.

Still not down, Invicta came back again with Logan leading the charge, he and Jason went close down the left. Joe L and Ben W were again testing the left of Hamsey's defence. We finished the match in and around the Hamsey area which just shows the effort Invicta put in. Praise from the opponents and the Ref for making this such a great game. No points, but a performance to be proud of. The same again next week against Palace Guard please!

4th December 2005  League Away to Epsom Eagles     Result 1-0 (L)

Away to League newcomers Epsom in what turned out to be a very tight game.

On a pitch that had been played on before, and was again after, and with a definite slope, Invicta kicked down hill for the first half, but didn't really make the advantage count. Epsom had a couple of big players and Invicta tended to take a look and stand off them, giving Epsom the chance to pass and threaten. In fact, there were just big players and if we had got stuck into them from the start, the game may have gone our way.

Epsom dictated most of the play in what became a midfield battle with very few openings being created. Matt was called on a couple of times and probably has the bruises to show for them. Invicta didn't seem quite themselves and were restricted to some long range efforts. So, nil-nil at half-time. I think another first for this team!

One change at the break and another shortly after, but it was still Epsom that showed the greater desire. The game was getting condensed more and more on what was already a smallish pitch. Epsom took the lead from a well taken shot, but there was a hint of offside before then. Epsom seemed to have four attackers at times as they pushed to sow up the match, but still Invicta weren't winning the loose balls, the one on ones or challenging for the headers.

Invicta nearly equalised through Jason Carver when his long range effort curled towards the far top corner, only to go agonizingly wide, but our chances were few. It is always a learning curve, taking it game by game, but we must all learn from these matches. Be first to the ball, get it on the ground and pass, not to dwell, support and talk to each other and hold our positions.

It was a good game, but one we could have taken at least a point from. Next week away to Hamsey C, we need to be our our toes for this one, let's give them a shock!

27th November 2005 League Home to Redhill      Result 4-3 (W)

Second against third in this league encounter and the teams, at times, produced some great passing football.

The first half saw Redhill ease into their stride and play a great passing game, lots of movement off the ball and speed on the wings, it was a joy to see. Invicta were again slow to start, giving their opponents far too much respect and time, conceding the midfield and allowing Redhill to play.

Saying that, the teams probably had an equal amount of goal scoring opportunities but it was Redhill that opened the scoring on twenty five minutes, then doubled their lead on thirty, taking the two goal lead into the break.

Invicta hadn't been playing too badly, Matt had pulled off a number of saves and Gary was solid at the back. Jason tested the keeper with a twenty five yard free-kick and Sean had earlier gone close. Halftime and the team were told to get closer to Redhill and deny them time on the ball, be sharper in the tackle and then get the passing going. It seemed to work.

Five minutes into the second half and Sean opened his account, the team was lifted and five minutes later, Leo was there to score from a Joe L. pass. Two minutes later Invicta turned the game on it's head by taking the lead, Sean again hitting the net. All Invicta were doing was pressing Redhill and showing far greater determination and this showed again two minutes on, when Sean completed his hat-trick (another) to make it 4-2.

Still plenty of time left and chances came at both ends, still the teams passed the ball well, still the keepers met the challenge. Invicta dug deep to keep the lead, despite Redhill adding their third with eight minutes left, battling to the end and in fact going close with the last move of the match.

Despite a couple of unnecessary incidents, this was a great game of football with little to divide the teams, just a bit of luck. Invicta must still learn to hold their positions, be positive and show the determination that they only showed in the second half. Learn never to give up, if you loose the ball, go and get it back, don't dwell of the ball, use it or loose it, and we still need to hear you talking to each other.

Like I said, a great game and a good result. Take this into the next training, then into our next fixture, another tough match.

20th November 2005 Shield Home to Junior Sports     Result 0-11 (L)

Up against a "B" Division side in the first round of the Shield competition the message for the team was to show the right attitude and apply themselves throughout the match, regardless of the scoreline! Not an easy instruction to follow, but for the first fifteen minutes or so, Invicta gave a good account of themselves against a well drilled, determined and strong football-ing side.

Needless to say, the example was being set by Logan and Gary at the back, Gary determined to make his mark, attempting to win the first ball, get the header in and clear the lines. Logan was everywhere, strong in the tackle and using his speed to sweep up at the back. In midfield, Ben G. was winning his share of headers, Leo again didn't stop running and Joe L. was always looking for the chance to run at the Junior defence, but today he was denied his usual share of opportunities, Juniors were too good to give Joe and Invicta time on the ball.

Ben W was running his heart out up front, never giving up on the loose ball and closing the defenders down. Sean wasn't far behind in the effort stakes, filling in in midfield to deny Juniors time and going close, very close with a first half chance that had to be cleared off the line. Matt showed his true colours, quick off his line to close down the attackers, brave at the attackers' feet, he never shirked from his responsibilities.

Let's face it, this was a team a few divisions above us and the difference told in the end. Their goal scoring was at times clinical, worthy of any league and to be honest a pleasure to see. They knew their positions and held them, when they broke forward, it was always in numbers, but again, all the traits you would expect from a B division side.

We can take things from this game and use them to further our league performances. We must learn to hold our positions, cover for a team mate when necessary, concentrate at all times and be aware of the players around us and most importantly give our all and support each other at all times. No one goes on the pitch to make a mistake, we are human and mistakes get made. Pick yourself up, get back into the game and give your all.

13th November 2005   League Away to Orpington     Result 3-10 (W)

A new venue for today's fixture, but Orpington always give us a good game and today wasn't any different. On a slightly smaller pitch with a definite slope, Orpington chose to play with the slope and it was plain to see why.

From the start Orpington were into their game plan, pushing Invicta back and making use of the slope. They played high up the field which took a while for our forwards to get to grips with. They opened the scoring early on and doubled it soon after, I'd seen this from Invicta before...... oh yes, last week!!!

It took Invicta a while to settle, two goals down, we struck back with ten minutes gone, Leo finishing well. At last we woke up, started to battle and win the ball. We learnt how to beat the high back line, slipping the through-balls and out pacing the defence. We tightened up in midfield, winning the loose ball and using it, Joe L. and Jason starting to shine. We showed more determination at the back, all four defenders getting stuck in and denying Orpington space and opportunity. The platform was now in place for Invicta to punish their opponents, Joe L finding the net and Sean scoring a first half hat-trick. 2-5 at the break.

Work was still to be done, but with the slope in our favour, you could sense the determination as the second half began. Chris now playing at left back, Joe B. pushing into midfield and Clayton now up front, it wasn't long before Invicta scored again, Clayton finding the net. Further goals from Jason, Leo and Joe L. getting two more to complete his hat-trick saw Invicta home comfortably, but we did let it slip a little towards the end. Matt pulled off a great save with his face, yes face! and still got back up for more. We lost our shape at the back and let Orpington grab a consolation goal, in closer games this may make all the difference!

Although slow out of the blocks, we worked hard and got the right result, a team result. Solid work from Lewis and Joe B helped Invicta build down both flanks. Joe B. putting through some great ball for the forwards to run onto and never afraid to put in a tackle. Lewis just didn't stop at right back, crunching tackles and linking up well with Joe L., who then outpaced the Orpington defence time after time. Leo never stopped running, creating numerous chances for himself and others, keeping us all in suspense as to whether he is about to shoot or pass!!!

Well done everyone, tougher matches ahead, lets start the games with the same determination we finished this one.

6th November 2005      League Away to Hamsey B     Result  3-8  (W)

An early start and probably the worst weather conditions we have had to face this season, saw Invicta take on familiar opponents, Hamsey Rangers B.

Being made to play into the stiff breeze, Invicta matched Hamsey in the opening exchanges, but fell behind to a miss-hit shot that sneaked pass Matt in Invicta's goal. Hamsey then made use of the conditions to play balls over the top of the Invicta defence, for their pacey attack to chase onto. Logan was more than a match for them, often making that last tackle to see off the danger. Invicta fell further behind to a correctly awarded penalty that Matt just failed to keep out.

Hamsey made it three and ironically, Invicta scored their first from a miss-hit, but Ben W. was pleased none-the-less. So 3-1 down at the break and to be honest, we weren't playing too badly, maybe bunching a bit too much and leaving space in the middle, but we hadn't been too troubled. Logan and Gary were determined at the centre of defence and Lewis was in the thick of things at right back. Jay played most of the first half at left back and once settled, did a good job before moving to central midfield. Ben G. got stuck in in the middle of the park and even managed to fire off two shots before being withdrawn with a troublesome knee.

Not too much to say at the break, keep passing, close down quicker and not to dwell on the ball. The game was still win-able and with the conditions favouring Invicta in the second half, Invicta did just that. Seven unanswered second half goals, determination flowed through the team as soon as their second goal went in. They knew they could do it. Five goals from Jason inspired the team and two goals from  Sean sealed the victory, but it was a team display that made it possible. Joe L. was running his socks off down the right flank, backed up by Lewis, who, due to an amazing decision by the ref, ended the game early! Jay was having possibly his best half and rightly got the Special Mention trophy for his efforts.

I must remind everyone, players and fans, of the Code of Conduct that you have all read and must abide by, myself included. At times we may feel hard done by, but referees run the games and their decisions are final and not to be questioned. If there are special circumstances, then I will raise them at the break or after the game. I will not accept back chat from players towards officials, I have learnt my lesson, now we must all do so!

This was a great second half performance that has us placed third in the league. To stay there or move on, we need the same effort against Orpington next week. Effort and application at training will show in our matches and bring the results you all want. Well done to you all and thanks to Colin for running the line and to the families for enduring horrid conditions.

30th October 2005       League Away to Palace Guard    Result 7-1  (L)

Heavy conditions and a blustery wind, made for a difficult game against a well organised Palace Guard team.

Both teams started well and there was little to chose between them in the opening twenty minutes, Palace often playing the ball over the top and chasing in on goal, Invicta trying to pass their way through. Matt was called on to make some early saves, Gary and Logan showing their intent early on in a game with determined play, Chris putting in some telling tackles from left back.

Invicta's first half chances fell to Joe B. who went close, Leo chased onto a through ball and went one-on-one with the keeper, who saved. Ben W. went close also, but on twenty two minutes, it was Palace who opened the scoring. Matt pulled off another fine save but on twenty seven minutes Palace made it two, despite the attacker pulling the Invicta defender's shirt and then Matt's! Invicta then conceded their third from a corner, the strong wind having a big impact on the ball as it sailed into the area, curving towards the goal all the way. Despite a desperate attempt to clear it from Joe L., the ball found the net! 3-0 at the break.

The second half began and three minutes in, Jason's determination got him in on goal and he finished calmly - a just reward. However, Palace now began to dominate the midfield and from this base were able to push forward and threaten Invicta's goal.  This half saw Jay, Clayton and Ben W all get a sight of goal, but it was Palace's shear energy and better finishing that made the difference. Matt was getting some rough treatment in goal, but stood strong and battled on, earning a special mention after the game.

Our second defeat this season, not a bad return so far. To move on again, we must show greater determination in winning the ball, then use it, not lose it!! Be first to the ball, win the headers, not sit back and see what develops. All simple things to say, but not difficult to do either. Palace are a good team and only the finishing made a difference in the first half. Let's re-group, give some thought to our game and put in a good training session this Friday and take that into next Sunday's game.

23rd October 2005    League Home to Edenbridge Utd    Result   3-3   (D)

Back to Swanmead for this home fixture against our local rivals Edenbridge and with me having to ref, my memories of the match aren't too great!

However, Invicta were quickly into their stride and after some determined play in midfield it was Sean Miller that opened the scoring after barely four minutes of play, with a well taken goal. This settled the side and they were looking confident and could easily have added to their score, but it was Edenbridge who scored next, a simple ball through the channel wasn't dealt with by the back four and the ball was slotted home. Two further goals in as many minutes stunned Invicta, but it was their inability to win the ball in midfield that gave their opponents the chance to again slot the ball through the channels and race on to score! 1-3 at the break, there was work to be done!

Changes were made at the break, both Leo and Sean picking up knocks, replaced by Joe B. and Clayton, Ben G. came off, Chris coming on and the back four and midfield almost totally re-jigged.

Invicta started brightly and showed more effort in the early stages, Jason desperate to run the play in the midfield and now with Gary and Logan at the heart of the defence, slowly Invicta pushed and probed. Joe L. was having a great second half, seeing a lot more of the ball and making it count with some telling runs down the right flank, a couple of times just over-running the ball as he approached the area, but more often than not getting the crosses in or forcing the corner.

On the left, Joe B. was making a quiet start, but soon came to life showing some great touches to evade the tackles and spread the play down Invicta's left, linking with Jason and Ben W. All of this was beginning to have an effect because on twelve minutes, Invicta scored their second, Joe L. linking up with Ben W. who slotted home. This lifted the whole team and unsettled Edenbridge. Invicta pushed on sensing another goal, it came after Joe L. forced another corner. Jason swung the ball in from the right, the ball was flicked back by a defender and fell to Joe B. who from seven yards out, coolly slotted the ball inside the left post, 3-3.

Back came Edenbridge, they weren't finished, they tested the Invicta defence a number of times and after a ball through the middle, Matt was called on to make a finger-tipped save to keep the scores level. Clayton came deep a number of times to win possession and support the midfielders and still Invicta pushed on, down the left through Chris and Jason, they forced a throw-in deep into the Edenbridge half. The throw came in square to Jay who steadied himself, moved forward and fired on goal, forcing a good save out of the keeper.

So the game ended 3-3, a spirited second half performance by Invicta, but it needed to be having given Edenbridge the initiative in the first half. Points to note, well, in the first half the back four were playing too flat and against faster forwards, they were caught out. In midfield we still didn't get to grip with the goal kicks and drop kicks, allowing Edenbridge to win possession and dictate the play. We must win the first ball, then push on and punish teams and not be put on the back foot.

These are all things we can work on in training, but then it's down to you to take them into the games. be first, want the ball!

16th October 2005     League Away to Horley Town        Result   2-3   (W)

An early departure for our latest league fixture and Invicta were very slowly out of the blocks! Maybe the few positional changes I had made unsettled the team, but we were still second into almost every challenge in the opening exchanges.

Horley opened up in a very positive mood, soon pushing Invicta back and taking the lead as early as the sixth minute, they deserved it. Still Invicta were lethargic, the early goal hadn't woken them up, lacking any bite, they looked almost content to let Horley run the game.

Gradually Invicta upped their game, but were finding it difficult to get their passing game together on a very bumpy pitch that hadn't seen much rain in recent weeks. With a lot of our play going down the right, Jason and Joe L. earned a series of corners and the odd free-kick. Jason went close with one effort and Sean forced a good save out of the keeper, with another attempt and as we neared half-time, it was Invicta that were pushing.

On twenty seven minutes, Jason brought the scores level, but three minutes later, after some frantic work on our right, the ball dropped to Logan outside the area, he just let rip, the shot was unstoppable and the half ended with Invicta 2-1 to the good.

A bit of a grilling at the break, plus a couple of changes, saw Horley now having to defend with the sun in their eyes. But again, Invicta were slow to start, conceding possession, slow to the tackle and forcing Matt to make a couple of good saves. Again Invicta's passing game had deserted them, the match was getting scrappy and when Horley broke down our left, they were held up by the first challenge, only to see the forward go down under the second challenge, in our area! Penalty. Despite Matt's attempts to put off the taker, Horley scored, 2-2.

This did seem to spur Invicta on, with some determined play in the middle of the park by Logan, determined running by Leo on the left, always loking to bring Jason into the game. We pushed and probed and on twenty minutes got the reward, with Sean finding the net. 3-2.

In previous weeks, we would have pushed on and taken the game, but not today, we made everyone wish for the final whistle and thanks again to some brave keeping by Matt, we managed to keep Horley out and win 3-2.

This wasn't a good performance by a long way, but we still took the points and now lie second in the league. You have shown you can play a great deal better than this and maybe I expect to see this each week. You have now set yourselves a standard with your first three matches and it will take the same effort and determination, to get similar results. Today we lacked thought and grit, depending on too few to do the work. Remember, football is a team game that needs eleven players at anyone time to pull together. You can do it, lets all put in that little bit extra that will prove it.

My apologies for not setting the right example and having a discussion with the ref!

Thanks again to Andrea for the match notes.

        9th October 2005        League Home versus Hamsey C           Result  1-6   (L)

Back to the Sportsground for our match against the early League leaders and it wasn't the result we had all hoped for.

Hamsey C are a well drilled and physical team who showed the greater determination from the first whistle. Bringing with them some vocal support, they set out their stall early on, not to let Invicta settle and attack at every opportunity. However, it was Invicta that had the first sniff at goal when they were awarded a penalty on eight minutes for a handball. Jason C. stepped up again, only to see the keeper save.

This seemed to unsettle Invicta and it was Hamsey that snapped back into action, always first to the free ball, always first with the header. They pushed on down their right and were finding too much space, despite Chris's desperate defending. Winning a number of throw-ins deep into the Invicta half, we failed to pick up on the distance the throws were going and fell foul to two sucker punches, long throws over the top, Hamsey's forward latching on and on nine and eleven minutes they were two goals to the good.

The game started to settle and Invicta managed to test the Hamsey defence, Joe L. was a force again down our right, always willing to take on the full-back. We carved out a couple of half chances that went begging, Joe L heading close at the near post from a Jason corner, but it was Matt that was being called on to keep Invicta in the game. Then, on twenty two minutes we fell for it again, another long throw and another goal. Lack of concentration and total lack of communication, somehow we were three-nil down! Shell shocked on the touchline as well as on the pitch, but the heads hadn't gone down totally and we ended the half on a high after some forceful play down our right gave Jason C. the chance to chip the keeper and pull the score back to one-three at the break.

Trying to rally to team at the break, we asked for more effort and guts to be shown. We were as good a team as Hamsey, but we just let them dictate the game. Unfortunately, the second half proved to be the same, but not quite to the same extent. Matt made another fine save six minutes into the half, but a minute later Hamsey scored their fourth. Four minutes later they scored again, offside? oh yes, but the goal stood.

Back came Invicta, Logan giving everything at the back, Jason, Leo and Joe L. pressing forward. We forced a series of corners, all testing Hamsey's defence, one making the net billow and the shouts rang out. Unfortunately, it was the side netting! On Invicta pushed with Leo racing down the left, only to be felled by the Hamsey defender. Jason swung in the resulting free-kick, only to see it just pass the far post. Hamsey came back again and despite some brave keeping from Matt, they managed to squeeze the ball in at the post.

Our first defeat, we always knew there were tougher games to come and this was one of them. We were not disgraced today, two goals were definite off-sides, but we did let ourselves down at times. We lacked determination in a number of positions, weren't first to the ball and were then on the back foot. We must close players down, from the front to the back, we must chase down lost causes, especially the keeper. So the bubble has burst and we are fed up. Maybe so, but not for long. Extra effort at training on Friday and determination against Horley next Sunday will be just the tonic we need.

2nd October 2005        League Home versus Oxted JFC "B"     Result   8-0  (W)

The first time we have played on the full size pitch at Swanmead and the team's determination and energy carried them on from last week's victory.

Opening the scoring on three minutes was Joe L., heading home at the front post from a Jason C. corner. Invicta were strong and in the mood, with most of the game being played in the Oxted half. With Gary F. making his first appearance playing alongside Ben G. in central defence, this freed Logan M. to play in midfield. His extra energy and pace gave Jason and Joe L. more freedom to push on and test the Oxted defence. On fifteen minutes Jason found the net, two minutes later Ben W. got his first of the match, typifying his determination.

Invicta pushed and probed, spreading the play , using both wings. Joe L. put in some telling runs down the right and some great crosses which unsettled the Oxted defence. On twenty minutes, Invicta earned a penalty, but Oxted's inspired keeper kept the kick out. Still we pushed on and on twenty two minutes, Sean M. got his first, shortly after Gary F. went close from another Invicta corner. Ben W. added his second on thirty one minutes, then on thirty four minutes, turned provider for Sean M. to add his second. Six-nil at the break.

The second half started with Invicta making two changes in defence, Chris and Ben G. being replaced by Jay and Joe B. Oxted were showing more determination as they pushed Invicta back, but in truth Matt B. was only called on once to make a save and he did that well. On ten minutes Jason went close again, he was testing the full back at every opportunity. This was followed up by a good run from Logan who saw his shot saved by the keeper. Jason, Leo and Ben W. all had further efforts, but Invicta just couldn't add to the score.

Joe L. was giving the left side of Oxted's defence a hard time and forced yet another corner, taken by Jason. Joe L. latched onto it again with another near post header, his second. More chances came for Ben W., Clayton, on for Sean, and Jason, but the keeper was on fire. Logan finally managed to top his performance with a run down the right, cutting into the box, his shot sent the net billowing. Eight-nil, another great team performance, but as I said, tougher games lie ahead.

25th September 2005           League Away versus Edenbridge   Result  0-2  (W)

Away against our old rivals Edenbridge where we had yet to take a point, Invicta started where they left off last week. With the bare eleven players, Invicta knew they had to work hard and did just that.

Jason dictated the play from the start, running the midfield, linking up with the front two and popping up on both flanks. His presence has given more confidence to the team and his reading of the game helped stifle what little Edenbridge had to offer. With Jay holding the midfield, Jason was able to link up effectively with Leo on the left and Joe L. on the right. He also put in some testing corners that spelt trouble for the defence and, had it not been for an inspired performance from the Edenbridge keeper, would have been on the score sheet.

So, pressure from the start, and Invicta opened the scoring on five minutes through Ben W., Leo doubled the score on ten minutes with a back post header. Yes header!! The confidence surged through the ranks from the attack to the defence and without any subs, this confidence was our extra player. Melodramatic maybe, but you had to see it. Invicta rarely let their opponents settle, confronting, harrying and tackling, then breaking swiftly.

The back four were determined, lead by Logan, a rock,  and Ben G. and well supported by Lewis and Clayton and Matt loud and showing a new confidence behind them. What little they had to deal with, they did well, Lewis reading the game well, timing his tackles and linking with Joe L., who never stopped running. Clayton is starting to show a good deal of promise in his first season, his enthusiasm sometimes getting the better of him, but with some thunderous tackles at left back, he made his mark.

Two-nil at the break, we started the second half with the wind behind us and the sun in our opponents eyes. We didn't rest, sweeping down both flanks and again forcing corners. The score line should have read more, but some inspired keeping kept Invicta out. But did it matter? Not a jot! The win was ours, the points secured by another team performance. How good did that feel? Marvelous. Dare I ask for more of the same, again!

18th September 2005        League Home versus Biggin Hill   Result  6-1  (W)

Our first match of the new season saw Invicta take the initiative against a below strength Biggin Hill. Opening the scoring on twelve minutes was Ben W. the first of his first half hat-trick. Invicta raised their game and dominated most of the half, Jason dictating the game from midfield, supported by Leo, Jay and Joe L.

Jay went close on eighteen minutes, when his shot went to the right of the post, but on twenty minutes Ben W. made it two-nil. It was a lack of concentration after conceding a free-kick that let Biggin Hill back in, taking a quick free-kick over the top of the sleeping defence and slotting the ball pass Matt.

Back came Invicta with further shots from Sean and Jay and numerous corners, but it was almost on half-time that Ben W. completed his hat-trick, much to the delight his Dad and the other supporters.

Ben took a rest at the start of the second half, with Clayton joining Sean up front. More Invicta pressure saw them find the net again, but good fair play with a Biggin Hill player down, saw play brought back and the goal not counting.

On thirteen minutes, Jason put in another testing corner that fell to Jay, who saw his shot go wide. Jason followed this up by going close himself, when linking up with Leo on the left, his shot found the side netting. Not content with finding the side netting, on eighteen minutes, Jason rattled the crossbar with another effort.

It wasn't all Invicta and thanks to some sensible and solid defending by Lewis, Chris, Logan and Ben G and some solid keeping by Matt, we managed to stifle the Biggin Hill threat.

Making one last change, Chris going off, Clayton taking his place at left back and Ben W. back into the fray, Invicta pushed on again and when Sean was brought down in the area, Jason grabbed the ball and scored from the spot. 4-1. Three minutes later Sean got on the score sheet, doubling his tally two minutes later with a poacher's goal.

Final score of 6-1, a pleasing start to the season with some good football on show. We used the ball intelligently and passed well, but at times reverted to some old ways and holding onto the ball too long. Win the tackles, make the passes and we can dictate the game, just what we did for two thirds of the match.

Well done to everyone as you all played a part in a convincing win, more of the same please.
