My first visit to South Africa was in 1974, since then I have visited the country at least 12 (I've lost count) times. Although a good number of my trips have been with a 3 or 4 friends the most recent and rewarding have been on tours operated by David Rodgers (email dcrslst@hotmail.com ). David runs a number of steam photographic trips each year, the main objective being to capture high quality steam action shots in optimum light conditions. The very fact that steam is in terminal decline necessitates that the majority of photos are obtained by the use of special charters, this does not detract from the superb photo opportunities offered to participants of the tours, I must say that the best of my South African photos were taken on David's tours.

Although it is becoming much more difficult to operate good steam charters in South Africa, due to limitations of routes, loco availability and lack of experienced crews, I hope David will run at least one more trip to this country, email him for details.

It is my intention to add to the images on view a few times a year so keep watching this space.
