During October 2000 Martin Robinson and I went to the east side of the USA for two weeks, the first week was spent photographing modern traction on various routes.
For the last week of the trip we joined up with David Rodgers party to take part in a number of steam charters on east side tourist lines.
Despite somewhat variable weather we had an excellent trip, the fact that we were in command of our own trains allowed us to pick the breaks in the weather on cloudy days!
The trip was self drive between centres and allowed the flexibility for individual side trips to be made as desired.
Motels in the main were well up to the usual US standards and as usual in this country there was always the temptation to eat too much at one of the many diners.
As far as I could tell everyone enjoyed the trip and provided they got their exposures and composition right must have got some wonderful photos.
Thanks must go to:-
The staff and management at the Cass Scenic Railroad for whom nothing was too much trouble.
The staff of the Western Maryland Scenic.
Carl Franz for all his hard work on the Western Maryland.
Carl runs a number of steam charters in the US, his style may not suit everyone, but the results are, in his own words "AWSOME!!", email Carl for details of his events (email at cmfrr@aol.com).
The tour was operated by David Rodgers of Steam Loco Safari Tours (email at
dcrslst@hotmail.com ) who runs a number of steam tours each year.
