Christmas is always has been a special time for us. The winter frost may of threaten our "Dig for Victory" garden but on the dining-room table, we still served our wartime Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, but without the turkey! We have been fortunate to of been asked to portray Christmas during the 1940's on a number of occasions.
We invite visitors to help us 'make do and mead' Christmas decorations The visitors children help us make (news)paper chains and party hats. Of course these are sent for salvage in the new year.
To give venues a special atmosphere we have recorded over two hours of 1930 & 40s Christmas music and wartime radio broadcasts. Naturally this includes the King's speech.
Edna adapts her wartime kitchen talk to encompass Christmas. During the talk she mentions how Christmases changed as the war progressed and the determination of the British public to celebrate Christmas despite the hardships.
When we are joined by fellow 1940s enthusiasts we do enjoy playing period parlour games. Younger visitors are often surprised how much enjoyment you can have at Christmas without a telly or play-station. We usually find the visitors often like joining in the games!
We have an educational worksheet based on the wartime Christmas available and click here to see a video clip of Harry making a mock turkey for our families Christmas dinner using a wartime recipe.
