Barnet FC - Overview
During the summer of 1888 the New Barnet FC club changed its name to become the first instance of Barnet FC. In the chair at the meeting was Mr Bullen Spicer the proprietor of the Cowley College. The club formed by the ex-scholars of the Cowley College and the Lyonsdown Collegiate School was expanding and a strong list of games was arranged for the coming season including the London Junior Cup.
This was the start of fourteen wonderful years for Barnet FC. Fourteen years in which they migrate from a field in New Barnet to a fee charging ground in High Barnet. Years in which they make their presence felt in the Middlesex and London leagues. Years in which they play professional teams such as Tottenham Hotspurs, Queens Park Rangers, West Ham, Leyton Orient and Millwall. But all good times can be inter-dispersed with bad, and in 1901-02 the worst did happen!
In 1892-3 Barnet FC enter the inaugural running of the North London league where they meet Woodford (champions), Sutherland, Tottenham Park, Celedonian Athletic, Olympians, hornsey and old rivals Finchley.
in 1896-7 they become champions of the Noth Middlesex Premier league and in the following season 1897-8 champions of the London League Division II.
During 1898-99 Barnet FC finished third in the senior division of the London League behind Tottenham Hotspurs and Deptford Town. This is the first time in five seasons they failed to win league medals but the competition is also the hardest they have ever met.
In 1899-1900 season the Barnet Club were handed a bitter blow when they were summoned to appear at a London Association meeting and subsequently suspended for 6 weeks. The loss of revenue exceeded £20 and over the next two years became a constant problem for the club.
For the 1901-2 season the club left the London League and returned to the North Middlesex league to save expenses. The club also moved from their Queens Road ground to Underhill and the Queens Road ground was then occupied by the Barnet Avenue team. For the only time in thier short history the club did not play in the violet & black colours. In November the Barnet club called a special general meeting at the Old Salisbury Arms Hotel, High Street, Barnet. It was decided to dissolve the club for the current season. The Barnet FC name then disappeared for another 3 years.
Long live the violet & blacks.
