HEART-OF-ENGLAND
VILLAGE GREENS

Many villages have a village green. A village green is often triangular. This happens when 3 principal roads meet in a village, which is often the case. There is often a large tree on the green, usually a chestnut (not an oak). And there is a bench. Nearby there is usually a shop, a church, and a pub.

The bench and chestnut tree typify the purposes of a green - for older people to pass the day, and for children to play. A few villages have a war memorial on their green.

Meriden Green The green at Meriden, with its cross which marks the centre of England.

There are modern buildings on the other sides of the green, so the setting is not as idyllic as it might appear.
