Hawks 1 v Jaguars |
Sunday morning saw Sue Henderson and Stef Lewie returning to the court, after recovering from injury over the last few weeks. They were essential players in allowing the team to beat Jags 1 with a nail biting score of 29-30. Sue started the match at goal keeper where she thoroughly pressurised the shooter. Play was flowing well from defence to attack and Hawks were leading 9-8 after the first quarter. Hawks increased their lead (16-13) at half time, thanks to consistent centre court play by Sara Higgins . Jags had picked up their game in the third quarter to lead by one (19-20). However, Stef Lewie came on at Goal Shooter in the final quarter where she made a vital difference and enabled Hawks to secure a 29-30 win.

|
Hawks 1 v Cottenham |
Hawks had a hesitant start due to some player positional changes and throughout the match consistently worked to improve play reducing the gap to 2 goals and winning the final quarter 14 – 9. Kate Foster-Collier took up the WA role for the first time this season and once she had settled into the match she timed her moves well to work with Sara Higgins at C and fed some excellent balls into the shooting circle. Sue Henderson returning from injury played an out standing game at GK despite the fact the Cottenham GS positioned well and was shooting very accurately. Viv Willox and Stef Lewey shared the GA position today both shooting very well. Hawks first team demonstrated great depth in their playing ability and the match highlighted some areas of play we need to develop to ensure we beat teams like this in the future.

Hawks 2 v Burwell 2 |
Hawks 2 earned a much deserved win at the weekend over
Burwell 2.
The game was well contested from the beginning, with
the score pretty close after two quarters. Then after
some tactical changes Hawks 2 started to dominate in
both defence and attack. Holly Stride played superb
in defence and Burwell could not break Hawks' attack.
Both teams fought hard until the end, but Hawks'
determination and sublime teamwork shined through,
leaving them with the victory the entirely deserved,

Hawks 2 v Jets 1 |
Hawks 2 played Jets 1 this weekend. It was very cold morning and Hawks found it a difficult start. The 1st quarter was tough and Jets pulled away with a 13 goal lead. By the end of the 1st half Hawks were quite disappointed as the score was Jets 29 Hawks 11. After a half time team talk by Geri McAloon (goal shooter) Hawks came back out fighting. Even though there was some great interceptions made by Juliet Good and some lovely marking by Sian Randell, Jets continued to hold their lead. The final score, which did not reflect the real effort Hawks made was: Jets (1)49 Hawks (2) 24
|
Hawks 2 v Milton 1 |
Hawks 2 pulled off a great win at home this weekend against Milton 1. The game started in close contention with it ending 4-6 to Milton as Hawks were unable to find their stride and a substitution was made and positions shuffled when Hawks' GD, Amy Willox, injured her hand and had to come off. In the second quarter, Hawks pulled back the 2 goals to finish the first half with a draw of 11 goals each. Hawks came out fighting in the third quarter and took control of the game with some sublime centre court and attacking play, and also a great defensive display, especially by Lesley Newman in her first match for the 2nd's. In the final quarter Milton fought hard but their shooters were unable to match the accurate shooting of Hawks' GS Jan Wright and GA Charlotte Pearson and Hawks won the match with a final score of 30-21.

Hawks 2 v Soham |
After a big win in November, Hawks 2 went out confidently for the
re-match against Soham but a strong, fighting Soham team took an early

Hawks 3 v Over 1 |
With a new line-up of players, Hawks 3 began their first game of the season cautiously. They soon found their stride however and went six goals ahead in their highest scoring first quarter. With eight goals in their favour at half time, Hawks 3 settled down and grew in confidence for the rest of the match. Kim and Sian kept a particularly tight defence and Anna Tinn had some lovely interceptions. The communication in attack was extremely effective allowing Laura and Charlotte Pearson to display some outstanding shooting. A fantastic start to the season for Hawks 3! Final score: Hawks 3 - 31, Over 1 - 12.

Hawks 3 v Stretham 2 |
Top of division Hawks 3 had their first away match to Stretham 2 who are currently bottom of Division 3. However the first quarter ended with Stretham leading by one goal. Hawks 3 began the second quarter with determination and gradually pulled back to end the second quarter leading 15-11. With a full squad available changes were made and some superb shooting by Charlotte Pearson Hawks extended their lead to 23-16. In the final quarter Stretham made further team changes which enabled them to pull back however, some wonderful interceptions by WD Lesley Newman ensured that Hawks 3 maintained their winning streak with a final score Hawks 3 - 32, Stretham 2 - 24.
|
Hawks 3 v Chesterton |
Hawks 3 met Chesterton this weekend in which was expected to be a close match. However in the first half Hawks controlled the game with brilliant play from all the team, and by half time they were winning 22-8. In the third quarter the competition hotted up and play got aggressive, but Hawks rose above it and continued playing their own game, with some excellent shooting from Heidi Bartlet and Charlotte Pearson. During the third quarter Kim Turner injured her ankle, but the team showed great versatility and the defence of Lesley Newman and Holly Cater rose to the challenge, with a final score of 42-23 to Hawks.
|
Hawks 3 v Falcons |
Hawks 3 maintained their winning record this Sunday when they met Falcons for their home game which was played outside at Hinchingbrooke school grounds. Unfortunately Falcons were one team member short, and this, combined with the heavy rain made conditions difficult. The game was contested well from the beginning but Hawks eased into their play and lead by 6 goals at the end of the first quarter. With the second quarter being fairly equal Hawks made a few changes at half time and, with some wonderful interceptions from Laura Pearson and Lesley Newman, saw them increase their lead again in the 3rd quarter Hawks 34 Falcons 22. Unfortunately Hawks lost some of their focus but despite Falcons scoring more goals in the final quarter Hawks manage to hold on the their lead and win with a final score of Hawks 40 Falcons 30.

Hawks 3 v Haddenham 2 |
Hawks 3 played against Haddenham 2 on a sunny winter afternoon on December 4 th at Haddenham. This was their last match before Christmas and completed the first half of the season. The two teams were at the top of division 3, with all to play for. Unfortunately, it was not possible to play all the usual 3rd team members but we were grateful to Jess for joining us as Goal Attack and Emily who played Goal Defence for the second half. Haddenham and Hawks started by matching each other for the first three goals from each side but then Haddenham pulled ahead and finished the first quarter in the lead by 10 goals to 5. Hawks defence worked extremely hard, putting their training in to practice, and did well keeping possession of the ball but found it hard to respond to Haddenham's tactics of blocking out the Hawk's goal attack with their centre court players and double marking the goal shooter. For the second and third quarters Hawks had difficulty getting the ball into the circle and had inconsistent shooting from the goal shooter whilst Haddenham looked confident and shot with accuracy to extend their lead and take the score to 21-11 at half time and 33-15 after the third quarter. However, Hawks did not give up and with strong team spirit and a re-think about tactics for the final quarter Hawks were able to create more openings in their attack and with Jess shooting consistently well scored 11 goals to Haddenham's 9, giving a final score-line of Haddenham 42 – Hawks 26.
|
Hawks 3 v Over |
Hawks 3 first match after the Christmas break was away against Over. Despite Hawks 3 having most of the play they only managed a 2 goal lead at the end of the first quarter. Hawks managed to ensure the ball flowed well down the court but the second saw both sides scoring the same number of goals, resulting in Hawks still only achieving a 2 goal lead. Changes were made at half time and with focus and fighting spirit, especially from Emily Drinkwater and Holly Carter in defence, they increased their lead in both the third and final quarter to ensure another Hawks 3 win. Final score- Hawks 26 vs. Over 18.
|
Hawks 3 v Chesterton
|
Hawks fielded 10 players, which i'm sure was a bit of a novelty.
|
Hawks 3 v Soham 2 |
Hawks 3 maintained their winning record when they met Soham 2 this weekend. With some of Hawks 3 not being available Jess Ferguson and Sophie Everest were call up from Hawks 4 to provide support as shooters and rose to the challenge well. Hawks took a while to settle into there new format but established a commanding lead through some solid attacking play by Alexandra Ely. Changes were made at half time and whilst Hawks, on occasions, lost their focus they continued to gradually increase their lead, through some excellent shooting by Casey Scott, to ensure a commanding win. Final score Hawks 3- 44 Soham -31.
|
Hawks 3 v Stretham 2 |
Hawks 3 played a comfortable, competent game against Stretham 2 this weekend. They started explosively taking an 11:3 lead in the first quarter and with some short, sharp, confident passing, they managed to extend their lead to 22:5 after the second quarter. A change of players at half-time broke the pattern with fewer goals being scored in the second half but good positioning for the ball by the Hawks side and continued strong passing made for an open, fluid game. Despite some great play by the Stretham side, a Hawks win was never seriously in doubt. Final score: Hawks 3 - 35, Stretham 2 - 19.
|
Hawks 3 v Falcons |
Hawks 3 began their game against Falcons this weekend with confidence and vigor but Falcons soon found their feet and took the first quarter 14 : 7. With Hawks' play showing no real spice or fight in the second quarter they only managed to secure 4 goals against Falcons' 7. A player change at half time invigorated the Hawks side prompting them to show some inspired netball and lessen the goal difference. Hawks continued with some lovely, strong play in the final quarter in which they drew level, and managed to take the lead, but Falcons fought back with determination to end the game four goals ahead. Final score: Falcons, 39 : Hawks 3, 35. The two teams agreed that the match was played well and in good spirit by both sides. Hawks 3 gratefully thank their guest players; Jess, Charleen and Kerry who all put in outstanding performances.
|
Hawks 3 v Frank Lee |
Hawks 3 started this match matching Frank Lee goal for goal. Unfortunately after 10mins, injury forced changes to be made enabling Frank Lee to win the first quarter. In the second quarter Hawks 3 came out with determination and managed to level the score at half time to 14-14. The second half of the match remained fairly even but despite Hawks 3 having the majority of possession in the closing minutes they could not achieve the win they required. Final score Frank Lee 26 - Hawks 23.
|
Hawks 3 v Haddenham 2 |
With Hawks 3 lying second in division 3 and having to win this final match of the season to get into the divisional play offs and Haddenham top of division 3 but wanting to win to achieve 100% wins for the season both teams had it all to play for. Hawks started this match positively and with some excellent shooting and court play managed to take the first quarter 8 goals to 6. Hawks 3 maintained their focus and exceptional defensive play to take the 2nd quarter 9 goals to 7. Haddenham changed their play slightly resulting in both teams being equal at the end of the third quarter. Hawks responded by making some team changes to maintain their overall strength they had of the game, and in a nail biting finish gained a place in the divisional play offs by winning the game by one goal. Final score Hawks 30 - Haddenham 29.

Hawks 5 v Cottenham 3 |
Hawks 5 played Cottenham 3 this Tuesday in icy cold conditions. Hawks 5 were missing two key members of their team and this certainly showed throughout the game. Hawks started very slowly and with an injury to Becky Maitland (GD) in the first quarter, Hawks had to rearrange their team, forcing players to play in positions outside of their comfort zones! By half time the score reflected the team dynamics and Hawks found themselves more than half way off Cottenham's score. Hawks kept their spirit and although always looking at defeat, managed to bring the score back to within half by the final whistle, ending the score 26-43. Jess Ferguson was named player of the match and congratulations to Alison from Rising Hawks who played her first ever match!

Led by Captain Rebecca Murphy and Coach Helen Stepney, this was the first game for the new squad and it was a good performance for Hawks who learnt a lot from the Netherhall. Hawks 1 proudly won their match against a formidable Bassets' with a fantastic 40-26. There was great play from the entire team in all areas of the court. The shooters worked well together drawing their players out and leaving lovely space for the ball to be fed into. Good support around the circle meant that centre and wing attack did not need to force the ball in. A good solid defence from Maxine Johns and Kate Foster-Collier left Hawks clear winners. This was a great triumph for Hawks 1 who had lost to Bassets last season.

Hawks ever the optimistic team stepped up their game and came to within just one goal of their rivals in the second quarter. As Centre Theresa Dickinson's determination was able to secure many interceptions and as a solid Wing Attack Andrea Linnell linked the play smartly up to the shooters. The third and fourth quarters showed Thomas Cook the better team on the day but all the players enjoyed their last game before the Christmas Break. Hawks promise to be raring to go in January. Hawks 1 took on Jags in a breathtaking match. But it was a controversial ending as the game stopped after 46 minutes - Who will be the victor? Jags took an early lead and at quarter time lead 8-4 Hawks were given some well needed motivating words by their Head Coach Helen Stepney and returned to the court a sharper team, winning the 2nd Quarter with some fantastic centre court play by the agile Sara Higgins and Superb Andrea Linnel. It was in the 3rd quarter that Hawks showed themselves the fitter and stronger side by winning the 3rd quarter. During this quarter several of the Jags players fell down perhaps from fatigue or from marking the opposition too closely. Tension was high as the score was now 18-17 in Jags favour. Hawks needed just one interception to level the field. Within a minute of the final quarter Theresa Dickinson delivered just that, an incredible interception. Unfortunately shortly after that yet another Jags player fell down injuring her ankle, so play was halted until she was assisted off court. It was at this crucial moment of the game with Hawks in possession of The ball, with the score at 18-17 that Jags decided to abandon the game; They said it was due to an unsafe court. Several questions were asked: How could the indoor court suddenly become unsafe after 46 minutes? How could the unsafe court only affect Jags? How could this court be unsafe when it is used regularly for county training? Hawks refused to have the game abandoned and remained on court as Officials tried to come to a solution. Hawks desperately wanted to continue play But Jags refused to put on their substitute and continue. So this very controversial of matters has been put to the premier Committee who will decide one of the following: 1. That Jags conceded
the game by refusing to continue, therefore Hawks win All players will wait with baited breath until the decision is made. We will keep you posted.

Hawks 1 had a fantastic game against Cottenham who are two positions above them in the premier league. Off to a good start both teams played strongly and finished the 1st quarter even at 6-6. But it was the defiant Hawks that took the lead in the 2nd and 3rd quarters with strong centre court play from Rebecca Murphy and Theresa Dickinson putting Hawks ahead at 19-17. Cottenham's determined players kept going and slowly crept up to level the scores to 24-24 at the end of play. The experienced Hawks first team was pleased with the outcome and feels the draw was a fair result for two well-matched premier teams.

Hawks 1vs Jags These teams were certainly well matched and the play on court was superb. Due to the absence of two of Hawkss superior player, Jags took an early lead and finished the first quarter 7-10. Hawks closed the gap with a solid centre court performance by the feisty Sara Higgins. But in the third quarter Hawks lost valuable goals in the circle and the score difference increased to 14-25. Drastic changes were made by the captain a total of five out of seven positions changed for the last 15 minutes of play. The versatile Karla Uys moved from goalkeeper to Goal Shooter and was confident and accurate. But it was too little too late as Hawks 1 lost to Jags 26-32. Hawks 1 were proud of their play and with encouraging words from their captain.

Head coach of Helen Stepney was moved from GS to GK and dominated the defensive circle with her experience and skill. Slowly Hawks 1 crept up to within 6 goals, they had won the 3rd quarter. Hawks had to step up their play and with motivation all around they went out with a positive aggression. The result was magic. Catherine Deans played a fabulous GD, her reactions were quick and her defensive skills superb. Goal by goal Hawks crept up to Royston's lead, and the final score was a well earned 34-34. This meant that Hawks had won the final quarter 12-6. An outstanding result and in such glorious weather to top it off.

|
On Sunday morning Hawks III lost by one point against rivals Ely, losing 29 - 28. Hawks started the match with some strong attacking play and managed to take the lead early on. Ely's captain took a nasty fall eight minutes into the game and with no substitutes, had to continue with six players. Hawks III have never beaten Ely and took advantage of their extra player, holding the lead throughout the first three quarters. Christine Rowe played an exceptional game as the Hawks centre, but, even with some excellent play from the Hawks defence, the Ely goal attack outplayed them. Hawks held the lead right up to the final minute when Ely came through with two quick goals to take the match.

This meant some players playing out of position against the unknown Bluestones team. Despite this Hawks 3 instantly worked as a team in the first quarter to take a commanding lead. The outstanding individual performances of Kelly Sharpe, Amy Wilox and Laura Pearson combine to provide a solid defence. In addition, goal attack, Kerry Robinson, provided excellent support to Geri McAloon, goal shooter, to ensure a final score of (22-10) that full reflected the game as a whole and to achieve Hawks 3 first win of the season. The final score: Hawks (3) 22 - Bluestone (10)
