Information requested about the Missing Havers Portraits

Philip J Havers of Seattle, USA emailed 4 9 2000:

Until the 1960’s his family possessed 5 life-sized portraits of the Thelveton Havers’. Because of bereavement they were dispersed. Their location is no longer known and they would dearly like to have any information about them.

They are of:

(a) Possibly an elderly Thomas Havers of Thelveton Hall (1692/3 – 1780). He sports a grey powdered wig.
(b) His elderly wife, Henrietta Maria (daughter of Sir Symonds D’Ewes of Stowlangtoft, Suffolk).
(c) Thomas Havers (1760 – 1804), with short hair and sideburns.
(d) His wife, Elizabeth (daughter of Robert Cliffe of Lincolnshire).
(e) Unknown male Havers, sporting a long wig – maybe a lawyer’s – possibly 17th/18th Century, on an oval background.

Philip discovered 2 other portraits were sold via a Christie’s Auction in the 1920’s. Some 4 years ago he traced them to Temple Newsom House, Temple Hirst, Yorkshire.

During the Grand Tour in Italy they depict:

(a) Thomas Havers (1728 – 1797) of Thelveton. He is dressed in blue with gold trim and is holding a white mask, in front of a red curtain.
(b) His wife, Catherine, daughter of John Dutri. She is dressed in light blue/grey with white lace and with an ermine buff, in front of great columns, with small figures in the background.

…. for a little gem of information from Carol Foss in the USA. Robert Havers b at East Lexham, Mitford District, Norfolk, son of Nathan Havers and Jemima Twite, emigrated to Mississippi in 1872. His eldest daughter was Carol’s g grandmother. Robert was a devoted Minister at Mrookhaven, Ms. His wife and some of his descendants are buried in the churchyard at Auburn, MS. Carol and family recently visited there. She knew about Thelveton Hall.

Incidentally, Carol, the Hall is still standing – just about. It is a red brick E shaped mansion.

… to Phil Havers who e mailed. His grandfather was Russell Havers, whose father was John Havers.

He visited Thelveton Hall about 10 years ago. He says unfortunately it was abandoned then, and starting to fall into ruin. However, he says it’s still a beautiful hall.
