Older still than the Castle is St Peter's Church,
which is reputed to be South Yorkshire's oldest building, and
which recently celebrated its 1,250th anniversary. The church
has been dated to 750 AD - but may be even older. |

This weathered stone pillar in the churchyard
is the remnant of a preaching cross and dates back to around
300AD. It was on this site that a wooden church was originally
built, later to be replaced by a stone church in the eighth century.
There
is also a carving of the Madonna and Child in the porch of the
church which is thought to date back to the time of the preaching
cross. |
|
The church has been altered and enlarged many
times over the centuries to bring it to its present shape and
size.

In Wellgate, just across the road from the church,
most of the community collected water from here, until water
was piped to the houses in 1903. |
