The Conisbrough Page
View from crags
Conisbrough is situated in the Dearne Valley, to the south west of Doncaster, in the North Midlands of England. Prominent features of the town are Conisbrough Castle, a 12th century Norman castle, and St. Peters Church, even older than the castle.

The Valley
Originally a rural area, it became quite a considerable coal mining community with the commencement of mining in the 19th Century. The mines have since closed and much local industry has disappeared, however there is now some emphasis towards attracting tourism and regeneration, with improvements at the Castle, and reclamation and landscaping of the former colliery sites, the construction of the Earth Centre, an ecology park devoted to environmental issues and sustainable development, and the building of a new leisure centre to serve the local area.
