Case IH

I spent the last part of my working life with Case, from the time of Case's merger with IH in 1984 up to retirement in 1999, so this is another area of special interest to me in the same way that International Harvester is.

Whilst the following are not antique or old tractors, they do represent part of the history of the Doncaster Tractor Plant.

85 Series (Colour Change)

Following the merger with Case in 1984, the first changes to the Doncaster tractor range was to introduce the new CaseIH colours during the spring of 1985.

The red and white of the IH tractors and the white and black of the existing Case tractors was replaced by the red and black livery still in use on CaseIH tractors. The former IH 84 series range became known as the 85 series.

 85 Series update

At the end of 1985 the 85 series was updated to bring the styling in line with that of Case's other tractor ranges with the introduction of the grille and side panels moulded in SMC and was known at the time as the "nose job". The machine range remained much the same with XL, L and cabless versions of the tractor being retained. The update included the introduction of air conditioning on the XL tractor (shown at left) and the start of shipments of XL tractors to the U.S. Up to this time only cabless tractors had been shipped there.

The 85 series update also introduced 4 wheel drive with a centre mounted transfer box and drive shaft instead of the previous system using a side mounted transfer box and drive shaft.

The tractor shown at right was the L version with economy cab built up on assembly line in kit form, available with standard roof or low profile roof as shown in the picture.

The 2 tractors shown here were from the first pilot machines in the update.

In 1986 the 96 series range was transferred to Doncaster, having been formerly built at Racine. Racine at this time was in the process of introducing the Magnum range.

Gear manufacturing and transmission assembly was performed at Carr Hill plant, which had been re-opened and re-tooled for this purpose and final tractor assembly was at Wheatley plant on the same assembly line as the 85 series.

 A and B Family
In 1989 assembly of the A and B family tractors was transferred from the CaseIH plant in Neuss, Germany to Doncaster Plant, at the time that Neuss were introducing the 5100 series Maxxum.

Both A and B families were formerly built by IH prior to the the merger with Case. For more information on the history of A and B family and history of IH and CaseIH manufacturing at Neuss in Germany, visit Matthias Buschman's website at http://www.ihcneuss.de . There is a long and interesting history of IH manufacturing at Neuss.
95 Series

In 1992 the 85 series underwent a further update to become the 95 series and was restyled with a rounder shaped grille and wrap around headlights. These were produced until 1994

The XL cab supplied by Croix was retained but the L economy cab was replaced by the low profile cab from Timmerman in France.

There was a major change inside the cab with controls now mounted in a right hand control console in the style of those in the 5100 series Maxxum.

A new hood in moulded SMC material and new style grille was introduced.

The ZF 4WD front axles used since 1981 were replaced by the Carraro Axle.

Shiftable 2 speed PTO introduced.

It was also available with front hitch.

Apart from the hood and grille, the cabless straddle tractors had very little styling changes. Fenders, fuel tank, seat deck, hitch, 2wd front axle remained virtually unchanged all the way from the 84 series cabless tractor.

MXc range
This represents the point where I retired from tractor manufacturing, the tractor shown below was the last major project I was involved with.
Following the launch of the MX series and the CX series at Doncaster, Case launched this version, the MXc in 1998 shown here. This was built at Doncaster using the transmission from the Maxxum coupled with the Perkins engine from the CX series range. This gave all the advantages of the already successful Maxxum transmission in a short, compact tractor, available with 80, 90 or 100hp engines.
