Fancy Pigeons

There are many varieties of fancy pigeons. Some of them are very colourful, some have unusual feather adornments or feathered feet. Some varieties are kept for flying, some for decorative purposes, some purely for exhibition. Pigeons are a lot of fun and very interesting, they have intrigued people for a very long time, embracing aspects of both art and science. Please click on the links at the bottom of the page to find out more.

Oriental Frills and African owls have round heads and short beaks, the Frills have feather adornments too, a peak crest on their head and feathered feet. They are a very colourful breed with fine, stencilled patterns. There are different types of Oriental Frill, the Blondinette, and the Satinette which are white-patterned birds.

There are many varieties of Pouter and Cropper, the Norwich Cropper (above left) is one of the largest, with an enormous balloon. The Pigmy pouter (middle) is one of the smallest, with long legs and slippered feet. Pouters and Croppers are very friendly like the White Gaditano, a Spanish cropper, above right.

Tumblers and high-fliers

Popular varieties are the tumblers and high-fliers, these are birds which perform acrobatics in flight, dropping out of the sky from great heights. Many varieties have been developed as exhibition birds with large, round heads and short beaks. The Northern Roller Club caters for the Show Roller. The English Short Faced Tumbler is a very small exhibition pigeon, the Long faced tumbler is much larger and comes in clean-legged and 'muffed' varieties, which have long feathers on their legs. Many of the flying, performing varieties are small birds, such as the L.F. Viennese and the Catalonian tumblers.
