This months feature is about sailing at Shoreham Beach on the South coast of the U.K. Shoreham is just West of Brighton and can be easily reached from the main A27 road that runs along the coast. There is a large car park that most people sail from (Widewater)with plenty space for everyone although rigging is on the shingle at the top of the beach. the best wind directions are W, SW, SE, E.
Shoreham has a wide variety of sailing conditions that vary depending on the state of the tide. If the wind is relatively light then low tide will produce either flat water or small waves that are perfect for people on their first visit to the coast or are getting into freestyle or learning to ride waves. As the wind increases so do the waves, if it is blowing 5.0 weather then you can expect to find some nice steep ramps perfect for big jumps on the way out riding on the way in!
At high tide the waves can create quite a big shoredump that has been known to break a few bits of kit. Most people avoid sailing for 2 hours either side of high tide - to preserve their valuable kit!! In the summer we frequently get sea breezes which can pick up enough for 5.0 weather and a wave board if you are lucky! But most people find that a 100litre freeride/style board is perfect with a 6.0 for some great summer sailing. You may find a few people using big formula kit here (I,m one of them!) and they are always up for a blast if you want.
The local shop is SURFLADLE (01273 465366)and they are a fountain of local knowledge. They stock all the major brands and have both new and secondhand to sell. Ask to speak to either James or Danny and they will be happy to help you out but remember two things -
1.Where you found the phone number(here!)
2.Buy some kit off them as it will make their day!
The beach also has its own range of superstars; here are a few names to watch out for: Nik Baker (has a flat here), Mat Pearch, Scott Topham, Laird Ross (Don't tell him he's good cos his head is big enough already! - can be recognised as he constantly says did you see my back/push/double loop? Of course nobody did!!), Adam Humphrey, Jon Malyon, The kitesurfers - just go down and see for yourself - its easier than writing a big list! The final thing about Shoreham is that EVERYONE is so friendly - so when you do get down there go and speak to a few people and find out about the days sailing conditions.
ENJOY!!!
