By the start of 1980, Ed Stewart had moved to Radio 2 with Tony Blackburn taking over Junior Choice and also the Top 40. Andy Peebles was promoted to afternoons and Mike Read to the weekday evening show:

On 30 August 1980 another round of cut-backs slashed weekend evening shows and shortened the breakfast show. To save transmission costs, the overnight relay of Radio 2 was also stopped. In a short-lived experiment, Simon Bates presented two separate Golden Hour shows on weekdays:

In 1981, Simon Bates returned to his regular show, Mike Read took over Breakfast and Steve Wright in the Afternoon started. David Jensen took over the evening new music show after returning from Canada, replacing Richard Skinner who had filled in after Mike Read moved to breakfast:
