January 1975
At the start of 1975, the BBC ran into financial difficulties and had to make major programme cuts. Radio 1 lost its late evening slots, moving some of the rock and progressive music shows to 5 PM and axing others. Stuart Henry, Bob Harris, Alan Black and Paul Burnett left. Radio 2 closed earlier and started later and relayed Radio 1 on weekday afternoons:

In Spring 1977, Radio 1's weekday output was restored to 14 hours a day, but the Radio 2 cuts remained, leaving the shared afternoon show. Series of different specialist music shows were carried in the Saturday 17:30 slot in the mid to late seventies.

During 1978, DLT took over breakfast and the whole daytime schedule was reshuffled. The drivetime show was extended by half an hour to incorporate a number of talk segments. Radio 2's broadcasting hours were also restored to 0500-0200, with the extra shows relayed on Radio 1. Lastly, Sunday night Jazz moved back to Radio 1 for the third and final time. The Saturday afternoon schedule was a temporary fix following the departure of Alan Freeman.

February 1979
Following the movement to a better transmission network in November 1978, Radio 1 introduced a full evening shedule. Originally, the new schedule was due to start the week before the frequency change, but industrial action delayed the extension of broadcasting hours by a few weeks, during which a temporary schedule including the new presenters was run. At the same time, Radio 2 went 24 hours in 1979, with the overnight programmes initially relayed on Radio 1:
