April 1970 In 1970, the BBC re-formatted the four national networks. Radio 4 became mostly a talk station, whilst Radio 3 broadcast mostly music. Radio 2 became more music based and took over Saturday afternoon sport. Radio 1 focused on pop and rock music, dropping the easy listening and jazz. As a result, Family Favourites, Late Night Extra, Night Ride and the Sunday night jazz shows changed from being Radio 1 to Radio 2 programmes, even though they continued to be broadcast on both networks. On weekdays, the daytime sharing between Radios 1 and 2 was reduced and a new strand of rock and progressive music programmes was launched under the Sounds of the Seventies banner: |

October 1971 From the Autumn of 1971, Sounds of The Seventies moved to late evenings and was relayed on Radio 2 FM. This marked the start of Radio 1 borrowing Radio 2's FM network for a few programmes a week in addition to those simulcast on Radio 2's AM network. This continued until 1990: | ||
