Reflexology is an alternative and complementary form of medicine that treats the whole body through a massage technique on the feet or hands. It is a natural, non-invasive, and drugless form of therapy that can be used to help many conditions. The principle of reflexology is that every organ, structure, and system within the body is mirrored through the feet. These are all connected through a flow of energy within longitudinal zones that segment the body into ten equal widths, five on the right hand side and five on the left. If the flow of energy throughout these zones become blocked or congested the body may function less effectively. Reflexology seeks to relax tension and clear the blockages, therefore encouraging the body to function normally, and also aid the body’s natural healing process. Reflexology was first practised over seven thousand years ago by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. Modern day reflexology was developed by an American therapist, Eunice Ingham, who based her method on ‘Zone Therapy’ that was first developed by Dr William Fitzgerald, an American nose and throat surgeon in the 1920’s who noticed that his patients were able to control their pain during operations by applying pressure to certain parts of their body. The main pioneer of Reflexology in Great Britain was Doreen Bayly who introduced the method in the 1960’s.
