The McGirr's originated in the clogher Valley, and are still mainly found in the Counties of Tyrone and Armagh. The first of the name recorded in the annals is one Malachy McGirr, "Maelechlainn Mac An Ghirr", who slew an O'Neill of Tir Eoghan in 1365
