Sat 13th
From Kirby Lonsdale to Tebay: big hills ahead of us! Lots of minor roads with moss & grass growing up the middle.

Sun 14th
Tebay to Penrith: A frosty cold morning followed by light drizzle turning to heavy rain, which stayed all day. Still, only our 2nd day of rain (the other being Easter Day) so out of 3 weeks we certainly can't complain! The journey took us through Orton up steep hills and then through spectacular scenery to the A6 and Shap where we enjoyed shelter and coffee in the Greyhound.

Mon 15th
Felt tired for the first time today. Walked from Penrith to Carlisle.

Tues 16th
A milestone day: arrived in Scotland at 1:07pm!! We were interviewed by the local paper and had our photo taken for the Annandale Observer.

Wed 17th
From Kirkpatrick Fleming to Lockerbie. Felt really tired today whilst walking and feeling really rather down. I don't know why. Geoff is being really good and looking after me, almost like a Mother Hen. I enjoyed the company of a cyclist, training to cycle with the vicar of Lockerbie around Ireland, who walked with me a while. We also visited the Garden of Remembrance at Lockerbie:- very moving.

Thursday 18th
Feeling better today, but one very boring road for 20 miles (B7076) to Moffatt. The railway one side and the A74M the other.

Friday 19th
From Moffatt to Abington: still the B7076! But the scenery has completely changed. There are mountains all around and the A47M hidden between them. I saw my first ever Weasel!

Now completed 580 miles and only 2 blisters. (So Far )
Sat 20th
Left Abington in pouring rain and wind. Luckily the wind was behind me and blew me along.

Sun 21st
Ferniegair to Kilsyth. We lost our way twice today. Instead of Hamilton we ended up in Motherwell and then went the VERY long way round to Kilsyth. Weather was atrocious: very wet & windy.

Mon 22nd
Kilsyth to Bridge of Allen. Again bad weather, but the wind is still behind me. It was definately the right decision to walk up the country, not down it!
We had our first "difference of opinion" today (!)...Just a few miles out of my way through Stirling. However, one hot bath and a cup of tea later and all is fine...

Tues 23rd
Bridge of Allen to Crieff. Hurray: a beautiful day. All very exhilerating. The scenery is out of this world. The miles are beginning to tell on me now. I'm taking longer to walk the same amount of miles. Still, I've got quite a few miles behind me now!

Wed 24th
Crieff to Aberfeldy. Again, stunning scenery. Unfortunately I fell over a twig sticking out of the ground five minutes after leaving Crieff and I have a very painful and bruised right knee. We travelled up the A822 before turning onto a single track unclassified road: it was truly breathtaking. We went through the Glen Quaice where I let the child in me come out. There was only me and Geoff so I couldn't resist shouting as loud as I could to get an echo back! Then it was up and up and up and up (and up) over a mountain pass. Anyone who knows Geoff will know of his love of heights! For him to drive over the very high and narrow road was admirable in the least. He was a lovely shade of white when we left the road. I also saw a Golden Eagle for the first time today: very graceful. We were offered our first free B&B too, by a very kind lady who saw me limping along. She gave us free tea, scones and an ice pack, but we had to decline her invitation to stay as we had already booked elsewhere.
Still...onward and upward as they say............

Thurs 25th
Kenmore to Trinafour. We bed and breakfasted at Tummel Bridge, amid a mass of wild flowers: violets, primroses and a whole field of cuckoo flowers. The daffodils in this area are still out in profusion. The mountains and hills are definitely getting higher and longer, but not too difficult. Still, perhaps the last few hundred miles have prepared me!

Fri 26th
Trinafour to Dalwinnie. What a day! I'd rather forget it. The journey was mostly the A9, with wind, rain, sleet and then snow, with a sore knee into the bargain. Now it's beginning to feel tough, but we wont give up. Saw a caperkalie which was good, but unfortunately the Dalwinnie Distillery was closed over the weekend, which was bad. (Maryanne's note: VERY bad, I'd say!)

 Sat 27th
Dalwinnie to Kincraig. The weather, although cold and windy with a bit of snow was not as bad as yesterday. My knee is still sore but did a good 20 miles today. The scenery is pleasant (if not a little bit samey!) and two cyclists out for the day kept me company a while...and gave a donation, which brightens up even sleety skies!

Sun 28th
Kincraig to 15 miles north of Aviemore. A lovely morning and a tasty lunch of soup and roll, but then the weather became typically Scottish....lots of wind and rain. I got VERY wet! Still, things improved when we got to our delightful B&B: No hot water, No heating, No food, Nowhere to get food (being a Sunday) and no reception whatsoever on TV. So we imagined we watched the snooker and the Grand Prix while enjoying the culinary delights of a Pot Noodle!!!!

Mon 29th
From Slochd to Inverness. What a day: the coldest wind I have ever encountered in my life plus horizontal rain. I could't keep an umbrella up so I had to get wet..It was VERY cold. After 10 miles I wrung out both my hats and gave them to Geoff to dry on the car heater. The rain finally stopped just before we got to Inverness. Walking 20 miles a day now feels rather tiring, but there is only one week to go so that spurs me on. Perhaps the weather will change and we'll get to see some of the wonderful scenery.

Tues 30th
Inverness to Alness. The weather has improved on yesterday: a slight wind but warm and sunny. We went over the Moray Firth Suspension Bridge (Ugh) today and a signpost at the beginning of the bridge said "John O'Groats 120 miles" The end seems nearer having seen that. We continued on the A9 for another 12 miles and crossed the Cromerty Bridge which is over a mile long. I was glad to be over that. Saw 2 cormorants and a seal in the Firth. Its been quite a good day although I have developed 2 nasty blisters. The B&B tonight was excellent.

Wed 1st May
Alness to Tain/Dornock. Another long bridge today: this time the Dornock Firth. There was a very strong side wind and the sides of the bridge were open wire. I just put my hood up, put my head down, looked at the edge of the pavement and walked as fast as the wind would allow to get to the other side as quickly as possible. A painful knee and blisters on every toe of my left foot has made for a difficult day, but I can almost smell the end......

Thurs 2nd
Tain to Brora. On the A9 all day today. The knee is slightly better, but the blisters still painful. Saw buzzards again today, in the hot sunshine with occasional short, sharp showers. Poor Geoff has developed another absyss and has to visit a dentist yet again. It must be 40 odd days of full English/Scottish breakfasts! Still, his diet at present is soup, porridge or mashed potato, so no crispy bacon and sausages from now on.......(no fried food must be worse than having blisters!)

This will probably be the last "update" that we will send by post from our trip as I expect by the time it reaches you we'll be preparing for our last day. Although its getting tiring now and I'll be glad to have finished, part of me is sad that our great adventure is drawing to a close.

Friday 3rd
Brora to Helmsdale. The A9 runs along the coast line with stunning scenery, despite a rain storm. Pleased to say the blisters are a lot better today.

Saturday 4th
Helsdale to Lybster. Lots of sunshine today and loads of wild life: curlews, buzzards, rabbits and wild flowers galore. Met 3 cyclists going to John O'Groats and 4 others going the other way, plus one lady walking to Lands End. It was lovely to talk to them all and hear all about their experiences. My knee is still painful, but I am walking on air today as I know the end is in sight.

Sunday 5th
Lybster to Wick. The weather was so kind today and the traffic on the A9 was almost non-existent. The perfect day for a bit of a walk....and only thirteen miles left to do!!!

Monday 6th
Reiss to John O'Groats (WOW).
A beautiful day, the sun has been shining, the birds are singing and there is not a cloud in the sky: what a great day to finish on.
I wanted to run all the way today but Geoff made me walk, which I thought wasn't fair. I found out why, though. When I crossed the car park at John O'Groats my sister Grace, along with her husband Malcolm and son Robert had travelled up to meet me with loads of flowers, balloons, banners and flags. It was very emotional and I shall never forget it. I felt like a million dollars! We all celebrated with chanpagne and then had a Chinese meal in the only restaurant around (Thurso).
WOW...what a day..one of the best ever......

WE DID IT !!

It has been a truly fantastic and very unforgetable experience for us both and without all your support and encouragement we could not have made it. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

PS

No, there will NOT be a lap of honour......but you never know, we won't rule out going back the other way one day....but not in the foreseeable future!!!!!
