A.Z. The initials of Ahmed Zogu, the Albanian President who had himself proclaimed King in September 1928.A.Z. was overprinted on Albanian stamps of the 1925 series and appeared again later on the February 1927 definitive series. Azemar An early form of postmarking machine that was developed by J G Azemar in 1868. It was used experimentally in London between February 1869 and the end of 1872.Although seven men were required to operate the machine, it was capable of canceling about 40,000 letters an hour. This was about the equivelent of the work of nine men useing hand cancellers.Unfortunatly the machine was inconsistant and about 10 percent of letters miised the postmark on the first pass through the machine.Modifications improved the machine, but the problem was never entirely corrected. The large overprint, which covered a block of 4 stamps, was applied by hand and consisted of the nationalist coat of arms.
