Aschaffenburg A german town which, in 1946 produced two distinct stamp issues.The first ofthese was a charity issue with a premium to aid the towns reconstruction. The stamps were designed byVollmer, (a local artist), and typographed by a printer in Wiesbaden. The stamps were issued both imperforate and perforated 11½.The 6 + 24 pfennig featured the parish church. The 10 + 40 pfennig showed Johannisburg castle, (built in the 17 centry). The 16 + 84 pfennig depicted the castle afterit had been bombed during World War 2. A provisional issue was made in June 1946 due to the shortage of regular postage stamps. These consisted of the Post Office circular label which was headed POSTAMT, being overprinted by hand with the GEBUHR BEZAHLT, (fee paid), mark. Although these stamps did not indicate any face value, they were used on packets and registered mail. Ash, John John Ash was the former printing manager for Thomas De La Rue & Co.In 1926 he was appointed Australia's Goverment printer, and as such he was responsible for equipping the printing works section of the treasury department in Melbourne.During his period in office his name was imprinted in all sheet margins of Australian stamps. When he retired in 1941, he was succeeded by W C McCracken. Asia Minor Steam Ship Co. A shipping line that operated between eastern Mediterranean ports headed by Captain Bell.Two stamps were released in 1868 for use on mail carried on his ships. The stamps were issued in 1 and 2 piastres values and were printed in black on green glazed paper.Only 13 copies of the 1 piastre and 11 copies of the 2 piastre are known to have been used. Asistenta Sociala Rumanian for Social Assistance, this is inscribed on two values of Rumanian stamps betwen 1921 and 1928. At certain times their use was made compulsary to raise money for dependants of soldiers killed or incapacitated in World War 1.The two values, (10 and 25 bani), had a common design showing an allegorical study of charity. Aspioti-Elka Grek security printers who started operations in 1911.The company produced the Hermes and Iris series which were recess printed from dies engraved by Thomas Macdonald in London.They also had a subsidiary in Corfuwhich released the general issues of Epirus in 1914. Assistencia Portuguese for Assistance, this is inscribed on various charity stamps to denote and additional postal tax levied on inland correspondence.The stamps were used on certain days to raise mony for public charities. The earliest of these stamps appeared in 1911. At Betale A norwegian inscription meaning 'TO PAY' which appeared on postage due stamps of the country from 1889 to 1927. Athens, Georgia A city in the Southern Confederate state of Georgia, (United States), which issued Postmaster's Provisional 5 cent stamp during the civil war. (1861 - 1865).The Postmaster in Athens, (T Crawford), authorised the production of a 5 cent stamp in 1861. It apeared in an upright rectangular format. It was engraved on wood and printed at first in dull purple, then later in red. Atkarsk A Russian town in the Saratov district which first issued stamps for the Zemstov post in 1871.The first issue was printed in black and had no denomination but was sold at 2 kopeck. (Only one example of this stamp has been recorded).Between 1871 and 1885 eleven issues appeared all showing the towns arms. All the issues upto 1874 were in 2 kopeck values after which the denomination was changed to 3 kopeck. Attleboro perforations Slot like perforations produced by the Attleboro Stamp Company, Massachussetts. (United States). They were applied to strips of the 1 cent from the 1908 - 1910 issue and 2 cent Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909, which were rolled into coils for use in affixing machines. Auner's Despatch Post A local post in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, (United States), which was set up by Alfred W Auner in 1851. In that year an undenominated stamp was issued which was type-set in black on grey paper.Only 1 example is known on cover.A later type was issued in a diamond format. This was inscribed with the name of the post and the value.Only 2 examples of this type are known.1 is on a valentines cover and the other on piece. Ausser Kurs German for demonetised or withdrawn, this is found as an overprint on Swiss issues from 1862 to 1881.All values were withdrawn on the 1 October 1883 and part of the remaining stocks were overprinted diagonally AUSSER KURS and sold to collectors at a fraction of their face value.
