Environmental Technology News Page

Introduction:
I have always been greatly interested in the technologies that allow a more harmonious existence of mankind with his environment, and remain a firm believer in the concept that development of these and other technologies may provide the most robust catalyst for lasting improvements in quality of life, sustainable living and peaceful co-existence throughout the world.
As such, for those who are also interested in these developments, here are my thoughts on some of the very latest new technologies that I feel show the most promise in terms of offering something beneficial to both mankind and his environment.

Jul' 2004 Battery-electric heavy goods vehicles!
Are battery-electric powered heavy goods vehicles a viable alternative to their diesel powered counterparts? The short answer is yes, and they can already be made with 700 mile range using technology available today. What's even more remarkable is that in the very near future, battery-electric HGV fleets will be CHEAPER to run than those using diesel!

Jan' 2004 Solar powered cars - never fill up or plug in again!
Some fortunate geography and the application of some of todays off-the-shelf technology could yield up to 11,000 miles per year from sunlight alone. And no, we aren't talking bathtub racers here - we're talking real-world-sized practical cars!

Dec' 2003 AC Propulsion T-zero: 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, 300 miles per charge!
What happens when you stick Lithium-ion technology into a lightweight battery-electric powered sportscar? AC Propulsion were also keen to find out, and were stunned at the results....

April 2003 Worlds top ten most fuel efficient vehicles compared!
This page lists my top ten most interesting concept and production cars with respect to maximising fuel economy, and comments on how incorporation of some other technologies into these designs may improve things yet further.

Dec' 2002 Lands End to John O' Groats on a single electric charge!
For too many years the general public has been mis-informed by the major manufacturers that long-range battery electric vehicles are either technically or practically infeasible. Here I outline a design for a 1,000 mile range demonstration vehicle based on lithium-ion technology. The calculations show that this ambitious target is not only feasible, but apparently attainable at relatively low cost!

Nov' 2002 Lithium-sulphur battery technology set to revolutionise electric vehicle range!
The lead acid battery was invented as long ago as 1860, but has for some reason lingered on in battery electric vehicle applications. Things may finally be about to change, however, with reports of a new battery chemistry that, early results indicate, could multiply the range of todays electric cars by up to 10-15 fold in the near future!

Jul' 2002 What Lithium-Ion could mean for electric vehicles
Some of my early thoughts on battery technology and the issue of range in electric vehicles, including a rundown of several present day electric vehicles and how Lithium-ion retrofit could affect these models.

Apr' 2002 Road legal concept car achieves 318mpg on public roads!
Volkswagen have been pushing the boundaries of diesel technology for some time now. When they really put their minds to it, however, this is the kind of thing they can come up with....
