MARK SCOTTER BORN 1854 Fisherman MARK SCOTTER was the son of REUBEN & SARAH SCOTTER from East Runton Cromer Norfolk England. He worked on the family fishing smack called the SUSIE. On the17th August 1917 the boat left her home port at Filey in Yorkshire to go fishing in the North Sea. Whilst hauling the lines a German Submarine surfaced. MARK was on the SUSIE whilst the three other crew members were in a smaller boat hauling the lines. It is not clear if the Germans boarded the SUSIE and then shot MARK or if he was shot from a distance. There was a large report in the Filey newspaper following MARK,S funeral. He was highly respected in the community. The funeral was largely attended and the coffin was carried by fellow fisherman. A large number of floral emblems were received one wreath bore the inscription, For MARK SCOTTER A TOKEN OF SINCERE REGRET IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF ONE OF THE BEST OF OUR BRAVE FISHERMAN WHO RISK THEIR LIVES TO OBTAIN FOOD FOR THEIR FELLOW COUNTRYMAN.The war memorial which honours the men of Filey who died for their country bears the name of MARK SCOTTER. He is also rembered on the Tower Hill memorial in London.
