There was a very successful male voice choir in Dolgellau in the middle of the twentieth century, but sadly that came to an end in the early 1970s. The present choir was formed at the beginning of 1986. The original intention was to form a small singing party which would entertain at social functions, old people's homes etc. but there was so much interest that a choir had to be formed. The choir is not primarily a competitive one, but the members enjoy singing together and travelling to entertain audiences when the opportunity arises. Good-natured fun and community spirit are hallmarks of the choir. The choir has travelled for concerts in England, Scotland, Ireland and Brittany and a special bond has developed between the members and the Chorale Clef de Sel, Guérande, a mixed choir from Dolgellau's twin town in Brittany. During October 2004, the Choir toured New York State in the U.S.A., our first visit to the States. The choir's repertoire contains some classical pieces, but as the membership is comparatively small these can be taxing for the voice. The programme contains popular Welsh songs, Welsh folk tunes, show-songs in English and Welsh, and hymn tunes. When visiting another country, the choir always attempts to perform a song from that country, in its native tongue.
