While self employment offers greater scope for individual creativity and challenges it also means that you have to be self reliant.

You are constantly asked to change hats from 'advertising manager' to 'sales rep' while also maintaining the day to day running of the business.

One of the biggest conflicts within self employment is that you fight hard to win the contracts and make the sales and then you have to turn around and ask for payment. This can often be compromised by retreating from asking for payment in the hope that this will keep your customers happier. There obviously comes a time for every business where the issue of slow payment starts to hit you where it hurts (ie the bank balance).

A useful tool for any self employed individual is to be able to take the spot light off them when they need to. Our experience tells us that many larger companies will take advantage of suppliers they know are on their own. The use of credit control and management systems can mean that you get paid sooner, your customers will value you higher and you are still free to use the services as you need them.
