Situated in the picturesque Wendron Valley, once the scene of intense industrial activity, the site’s attractive surroundings and gardens belie its industrial past. The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers was established in 1852 in Newcastle to look at the safety of mining and to establish a literary institution.
