Apart from the initial service after 500 miles, I have maintained and serviced the bike myself. It's not too difficult apart from getting the shims out from under the cams to alter the valve clearances. I use two screwdivers, one to lever the bucket down and the other which I ground down so that it catches the edge of the bucket, leaving room for the shim to come out. A flattened piece of brake pipe shaped in a U completes the latter task. I was fortunate enough to be given a box of shims by a friend who had recently sold his GS, therefore, I rarely have to go to a shop to purchase different size shims.

When riding a motorcycle, regular maintance is paramount. Regular checks on tyre pressures, shock absorber pressures (yes it has gas assisted forks and shockers), chain tension/lubrication should be carried out at least weekly. I have changed the oil and filter every 1500 miles. The valve clearances are checked every 3000 miles.
