FUERTEVENTURA
January 21st to January 28th 2004

Drove to Cardiff Airport and left our car at the Old Station Car Park in Gileston nearby. Their telephone number is 01446 751083. They will take you on a mini bus to the airport included in the cost which was £20 for the week.
Fuerteventura has an excellent web site at www.fuerteventura.com
Another website which includes links to up to date bus timetables is at www.sunnyfuertaventura.com
All walks were suggestions found in the Cicerone Guide "Walking in the Canaries : 2 East" ISBN 1-85284-368-3 and used the "Kompass" map number 240 at a scale of 1:50,000 for the day's we deviated slightly from the suggested routes.
Stayed at the Castillo Playa self catering Apartments in Calete de Fuste. They have a bar and pool area but not much in the way of evening entertainment apart from Bingo, Football on TV, a parrot show and Kareoke. Calete de Fuste is a quiet resort with manmade beach and harbour. Plenty of shops and restaraunts. A new shopping complex nearby also has a cinema and bowling alley.

Morro Jable to Baranco de Gran Valle and back. 7 miles
Caught a Number 10 bus outside Calete de Fustes on the main road at 9.20pm. There are only three a day. Spotted our first Chipmunks today scurrying in and out of an old stone wall. The last bus back left at 3.45pm

Lajares to Corralejo 8.25 miles.
Took a bus number 3 into Puerto Rosario. These go every half an hour. With time to kill we weren't too impressed with Puerto Rosario. Caught a number 7 bus at 10.00am (only three a day) to Lajares. This track passes the impressive crater of the extinct volcano Calderon Hondo and a three roomed goatherds hut. Corralejo had plenty to keep us occupied for some time before catching the number 6 half hourly bus back to Puerto Rosario and the number 3 to Calete de Fustes

Antigua to Betancuria 8.75 miles
This was our favourite walk of the week. The bus number 1 took us at 8.30 from Puerto Rosario to Antigua. We followed an excellent path up over a mountain pass to the pretty village of Betancuria which was the capital of Fuerteventura until 1834. Aloes and Prickly Pears growing on the northern hillsides. Another climb to Mirrador Morro Velosa with spectacular views and back to the agriculture area of Antigua and it's shaded plaza near the church. Caught the 3.30 bus back.

Calete de Fuste to Playa de Leandro and back 14 miles
Just followed the coastline south from Calete de Fuste. Passed a fascinating whale skeleton near the salt pans of Salinas del Carmin. A very pretty oasis sits in the barranco at Puerto de la Torre and the beach of Playa de Leandro was completely deserted.

La Olive to El Cotillo 11.75 miles
Caught the 10.00am number 7 bus from Puerto Rosario to get off at La Oliva. Headed across a plain towards Mount Tindaya then dropped down through the Barranco de Esquinzo and over another plain to the high cliffs at Playa del Aguila. A coastal walk then took us to El Cotillo where there is a castle open to the public doubling up as an art gallery. Not much going on in the village but loads of surfers on the beach there. Caught the last number 7 bus back at 5.00pm.

Tiscamanita to Gran Tarajal 14 miles
Caught the 8.30 number 1 bus to Morro Jable getting off at Tiscamanita. Crossed the Malpais Grande an ancient rugged lava flow. Old volcanos all around. Made friends with a wild camel. Detoured from the route in the book to follow the Barranco Grand Tarajal directly into Gran Tarajal. This is a nice normal town with regular shops, good beach and restaraunts. Caught a number 10 at 5.00pm straight back to Calete de Fuste.
