John Norman was born in Norwich in 1657 and lived in Old Catton. He prospered as a local farmer, landowner and brewer. He eventually became an Alderman and Mayor of the City of Norwich.
He died in 1724 and although having married twice, had no children. however, he was extremely interested in the education of children and left the bulk of his estate 'In Trust' to educate the male descendants of his close relatives (as shown in the First Schedule).
His wish was to have a school built for the benefit of these descendants, although it was eventually built there were insufficient funds to maintain it, it was closed in 1934.
In 1839 the descendants were unhappy with the way the Foundation was being handled, and formed 'The Claimants Unity' to keep a watchful eye on the Trustees.
Since then, a Charitable Foundation has been set up under the rules of the Charities Commission. This provides educational grants to all children able to prove descendancy, starting from the age of 8 through to the completion of higher education, at the normal school leaving age. Most are means tested. Grants can be made for 'Tools of the Trade'. The first step is to gain a Pedigree from the Unity, we will then advise what grants may be available.
The Claimants Unity now has a membership of 850+ descendants and works closely with the Trustees to ensure the funds are administered to the benefit of all claimants.
