Everyone’s guide to the English criminal courts

This book has been written for those who find a member of the family in trouble with the law, or for those who have an interest in the working of the English Courts of Law. Most of us, who have never committed a crime, have no idea what to expect. Much of the book has been written in a question and answer format. The questions are based on those the author has been asked while working with the families of offenders.

70,000 men are in our prisons; 70,000 families have to live with this fact and the consequences it brings to the families. Although both men and women are resident in English prisons this book has been written as if for the male prisoner, this is to avoid the annoyance of repeated “he/she” throughout the book. A short section on “Women in Prison” has been included near the end of this book.

Every effort has been made to check that information is correct, however the law changes, and each prison is different and there maybe minor discrepancies though I have made every effort to check my facts.
