11.15 “Where do we all come from?” by David Holding

Around 60,000 years ago, a man walked the soil of Africa. Every person alive today is descended from him. How did he become the father of us all – a real life Adam?
We will investigate the origins and distribution patterns of modern humans through the use of DNA analysis.
David has a lifelong interest in the ancient world, particularly in the medical and trade practices of early settlements. Having worked extensively in the medical supply trade of our own 20th and 21st centuries, it can be said that he is well qualified for this study. David is an AEMES Committee member, archivist and has been a member of the Society for a number of years.

12.45 Lunch (included) followed by:

“Pets or Powers: Animals in Ancient Egypt” by Carol Andrews

This talk looks at why the ancient Egyptians appear to have worshipped as deities, just about every living creature. Not just animals and birds but reptiles and fish, even the dung beetle was considered the manifestation of one god or another. Yet the same creatures, who in temples would be gods, elsewhere were working animals or household pets. All will be explained, aided by profuse illustrations.
Carol was Assistant Keeper/Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum for 28 years until the year 2000. She has written several books including: Ancient Egyptian Jewellery, Amulets of Ancient Egypt and Egyptian Mummies. She has taught an advanced hieroglyphics class for more than 25 years and excavated in Saqqara and Ashmunein. Her lecture programme has taken her to Egypt, Australia, the USA, the Far East, Asia and Europe. She is currently Lecturer for FLL, Birkbeck College, London.
