6 Economic Strategy - Social Welfare

6.1 Deprivation

Because there is a direct link between social deprivation and health, involvement with the primary care group would provide an insight into where the Council could contribute in a community sense to local wellbeing. Given the make up of the community there is a need to address the needs of the elderly as well as those of young families. In the former case monitoring the health of vulnerable individuals is important. Spiritual deprivation also has a link with those who feel left out of society. Through organisations, which purport to care, we should encourage day to day contentment within the community. It is important that real consultation and involvement in decisions about the community are used to encourage a sense of community ownership. This is most important for the young.

6.2 Volunteers

Volunteer groups should be encouraged, part financed and put in touch with tasks needed. Where this involves physical effort groups of young people might be set up with the co-operation of schools and youth clubs. Advice of money management, diet and parenting skills are areas where more mature volunteers may be useful. The initiation of a Time Bank should be considered.

6.3 Community Transport

Parish councils have the power to support community transport. We should be investigating how these powers to ensure that those who are dependent on public transport such as the old, the young and the disabled have access at a price, at a time and in areas they will find convenient. However, community buses should be available to all residents. We suggest a shuttle serving only the Bletchley area.
