Buckingham Road Traffic Calming Scheme
       Fatality causes reconsideration
The traffic calming scheme for Buckingham Road was saved from the cuts made by Milton Keynes Council during 1999. Most of the proposed scheme has now been completed.  The progress achieved in slowing down the traffic is questionable. A recent fatality demonstrates that it may be no easier for pedestrians to cross the road! However, the area outside Chestnuts school is now being considered as part of the safer routes to school scheme,

West Bletchley Neighbourhood Council had requested that the 30MPH sign near to the junction of Buckingham Road Whaddon Way should replace the existing 40MPH near to Weasle Lane and requested 30MPH repeater signs on lampposts and on the road surface along Buckingham Road particularly alongside the Schools. Milton Keynes Council did not consider it necessary to change the existing signs and believes that this could not be implemented under current legislation.. West Bletchley Neighbourhood Council have asked for this to be reconsidered to prevent traffic travelling above the speed limit alongside the Chestnuts (previously Alex Campbell) School.

After some months, one of a number of accidents resulted in a fatality. Milton Keynes Council asked for discussions with Neighbourhood Council representatives. Repeater signs, extending the 30 mph limit, entry gates behind the sign and road surfacing were raised. As a result it was agrred that the 30 mph sign would be made more prominent and additionally written on the road surface. A speed camera would be introduced opposite the 'Chesnuts' school.

Requests to renew the pedestrian barriers under the railway bridge have been rejected.
