22.01.2003 - SALLE URSA'S HAPPY NEW YEAR! Salle Ursa fencing has seen the New Year begin with a bang following the start of two new beginners courses at its Coventry and Warwick clubs. Both courses were heavily over-subscribed leaving some applicants disappointed. Jenny Barber, courses administrator and secretary said "Both Coventry and Warwick courses had a lot of interest in the run up to Christmas, but since the New Year everyone seems to have a resolution to start fencing! We're extremely pleased to have so many new faces in the association." Potential members of the club should not be downhearted though, the association will be running another two courses at its Coventry and Warwick locations later on in the spring. The blow comes two weeks after returning from reaching the semi-finals at an international fencing competition in Ontario, Canada. Sacha Brooks from Sherbourne, was delighted to be selected to attend the Royal Military College's 32nd international fencing competition, in Kingston, Ontario. She eventually reached the semi-finals of one of North America's biggest team fencing competitions going out in the women's team sabre to eventual winners Westpoint military academy. Over 600 fencers from across Canada and the USA attended the event at the beginning of November.

05.12.02 - Warwick invade Derry! - Warwick fencers had an extremely successful trip over the over to the Emerald Isle in early December for a good old knees-up (and some fencing!) Coach Peter Rome took a squad of eight fencers on a well-known budget airline - many of the team entering their first competition. Not-so-novice foilest Jenny Barber pulled out all the stops reaching the last 8 in her first competition as did Geoff Browitt gaining a very credible place in the last 16 of the men's foil. Club coach Peter Rome, narrowly missed the top spot in the sabre after a closely fought final.

CLUB NEWS - 04.08.02 Fencing in the Park - a bright and sunny weekend brought the eight of the club's fencers out into the fray this weekend. The club's first outdoor fencing event held in nearby St Nicholas park proving to be an outstanding success. Passers-by seemed unconcerned with the antics of the Warwick swordsman, which encouraged many residents to come and watch and even act out their own duels - with tree branches and sticks!
