WHY FENCE?

Back in the good old days before anger management classes (and the police), men (and women) used to fight, usually with whatever was to hand at the time.

This sometimes understandable display of aggression evolved to encompass the use of swords. Having become an effective and quite fashionable way of gracefully skewering your partner, swords became the 'weapon of choice' in settlement of 'honourable disagreements' (you've seen the films!).

Since then, and to retain some form of legality, Fencing has attained almost cult status as an art that also happens to be a fast and furious modern Olympic sport.

One of those sports where you can quickly pick up the basics and progress, fencing is sport where success is generally achieved through the lightest and subtlest of touches.

Often referred to as 'physical chess' and 'violent ballet', fencing develops your mind (as well as firming your bum!). However unfit you perceive yourself to be, pure deviousness, technique and mental agility are all the skills you need to become a truly proficient practitioner of this 'cerebral sport'.

FAQs - STARTING OUT

If your question is not here write to: salle_ursa@hotmail.com

Q. Does it matter about age?
A. Not at all, - it's a case of some fitness plus mental agility combined with technique and sheer deviousness.

Q. How much will this cost?
A. Please see our contact & costs page.

Q. I've never fenced, do I *have* to join a beginners course?
A. Yes. We like to ensure that all beginners are properly looked after. It's always more fun to learn in a group where everyone has the same level of experience and it's safer too.

Q. What should I wear when I start?
A. Wear comfortable sportswear - like something that you might go to the gym in. T-shirts, cycling shorts and track-suit bottoms are all fine. For your feet, socks and trainers.

Q. I've fenced before - what's the standard?
A. We have beginners through to good intermediate. Many of our members regularly compete at the national opens.

Q. What does Salle Ursa mean?
A. 'Salle' is a french word meaning 'room' also indicating a fencing club. 'Ursa' is latin for bear - relating to the association's strong links to Warwickshire.
