The Israeli state was formed as a demonstration of the victory of Zionist ideology Jews worldwide had to be convinced that its formation was in their best interests. Now they have to think this lays in its maintenance their very existence being threatened if it’s allowed to fail. It was born out of another state Palestine and not from its ashes. 1896: Theodore Herzl, Zionism’s founding father was the first to promote this in his book The Jewish State that either Palestine or Argentina be the chosen homeland. 1897: First Zionist Congress held in Switzerland, issuing the Basle program on the colonization of Palestine and the establishment of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). 1906 the congress had settled on Palestine. 1914: Independence was promised to Arab lands including Palestine formally under the tribal Ottoman Empire in return for their support against Germany’s new ally Turkey. 1916: Sykes-Picot Agreement signed between England and France dividing the Arab region into zones of influence. France got Lebanon and Syria and England got Jordan and Iraq while Palestine was to be internationalized. 1917: Balfour Declaration issued as a letter from the foreign secretary Arthur J. Balfour to a British Zionist leader saying the British government was in favour of, and would do its best to establish in Palestine a home for the Jewish people, without prejudicing the rights of non Jews or those of Jews elsewhere. 1922: Council of the League of Nations issued a Mandate for Palestine to set up a Jewish homeland in the state. 1937: British government administers the state via this mandate setting up the Peel Commission under Lord Robert Peel which declared the mandate unviable recommending partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states with a neutral sacred site state administered by Britain. 1947: British government calls on U.N. to intervene and help them save face and leave. U.N. decides to partition Palestine with Jerusalem as an international zone under their jurisdiction. 1948: 13th, 14th and 15th August marked the mandate’s expiry, the Provisional State Council decision to implement a separate Jewish state, British planned withdrawal and the 1st Arab-Israeli war. Rioting had led the Egyptian, Transjordan (now Jordan), and Syrian, Lebanese, and Iraqi armies to join Palestinian and other Arab guerrillas in their common cause. 1948: Israel formed despite the war, ending with 4 U.N armistice agreements between Israel and Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. 1967: 6 days war, the frontiers set in 1948 had remained un-altered until Israel’s new annexations of Sinai in this war with Egypt.
