The Christian community that is called the Parish of St Edward consists of the men, women and children who gather Sunday by Sunday at their church building on London Road to celebrate their weekly Eucharist together. Without this weekly gathering St Edward’s would not exist.
St Edward’s is a small parish, whose members are friendly and welcoming. No one is anonymous there. This atmosphere leads to involvement and a community feeling within the parish that leads to a commitment to pitch in when something needs to be done. We do many things together like Christmas Fairs, walking in the local hills, ceilidhs, shared tables at various functions, and informal weekly gatherings for cups of tea and chat after Sunday Mass, and many other things.
Children are the future of any community, and ours is no exception. There are close ties between our Church and our school: St Edward’s Primary School in Fir Grove. School children regularly prepare and lead our Sunday Masses with great distinction. Our parish has a great musical tradition, and both children and the general congregation sing like angels!
On Sunday morning the children have their own Liturgy of the Word, which blends reflection on the Sunday readings, with activities that all children enjoy, like colouring, cutting up and sticking things together, to bring the day’s teaching to life. The teachers in this work are parents, and parents help also in the preparation of children for first Holy Communion and for Confirmation.
The post confirmation group have formed a Youth Club, together with support from their parents. They sample different hobbies, including rock climbing, board games and archery. Scuba diving and falconry are possibilities for the future. Young people also help at Sunday Mass, welcoming people, and even taking collections, and ringing the church bell!
Members of this parish do a great deal of quiet good work among the poorer and more disadvantaged people of our area. The sick are visited in their homes, and receive Holy Communion from Special Ministers.
Our parish members come from many different backgrounds, and this fact, united by the spiritual focus that Fr Fred, the parish priest, provides, creates an especially happy atmosphere.
Be assured that you will be very welcome here.
