April 2007 to March 2008

1 April 2007 Planting and maintenance at the Wildlife Garden, Waterworks Nature Reserve, E10 – the garden is still under construction, and this is a key phase for planting up the first areas.

6 May 2007 Construction at the Wildlife Garden, Waterworks Nature Reserve – task may involve building a raised bed or natural fencing, or extending the stag beetle loggery.

3 June 2007 Building an otter holt (joint activity with Lea Rivers Trust) – a number of otter holts have already been built by the Trust, but this will be the first in our part of the Lee Valley.

1 July 2007 Clearing the ditches on Walthamstow Marsh – we will be removing Reedmace and other tall plants from the ditches so as to let Flowering Rush, other plants and dragonflies thrive.

5 August 2007 Wildlife Garden maintenance, Waterworks Nature Reserve – weeding and watering will be a priority, but this is also a great chance to see the progress in the garden’s first year.

2 September 2007 Plug planting and maintenance at Three Mills Island, E3 – additional tasks may include wood-chipping the nature path and building a stag beetle loggery.

7 October 2007 Planting Barberry at Leyton Marsh – planting more shrubs among the existing ones and cutting back other vegetation to give this rare shrub lots of space to grow and spread.

4 November 2007 Clearing reed beds and seasonal bonfire at the Middlesex Filter Beds – this regular task helps maintain them in a healthy condition for the bird life.

2 December 2007 Coppicing at Horseshoe Thicket, Walthamstow Marsh – this popular activity continues the 12-year rotation and benefits Willow Warblers and other scrub-loving birds.

6 January 2008 Bed wall maintenance at the Middlesex Filter Beds – essential maintenance involving bramble and scrub bashing to preserve the heritage and integrity of the beds.

3 February 2008 Hedge-laying at the Essex Filter Beds – have a go at this ancient art as part of efforts to bring Beds 16-18 back into order. Possibly also the chance to do some dead hedging.

2 March 2008 Improving the environmental richness of the Essex Filter Beds – task may include building a bird feeding area and Sand Martin barrels. To be confirmed nearer the date.
