Kamchatka in Winter

Khodutka River is a little resort to the south of Petropavlovsk, where a whole section of the river is one big hot-spring. There's a couple of lodges here, a heli-pad and the bathing facilities, that's it. No roads. No houses.

This flat valley with various little woods and streams is a good place to try cross-country skiing.

All the water to the left of the bridge here is hot!

In somes places, there's streams of small bubbles popping up to the surface through the gravel, enveloping your body as you relax.

In other places, there's a welling-up of the water, like a huge pot on simmer.

Near the centre, it's too hot to take for long, but you can find a position with the perfect level of heat.

The snow gives a really exotic feel to the place. The air is so cold your hair soon turns to icicles.

The lodges are really cosy, double story with bedrooms on top and a wood-burning stove to keep them warm throughout the night.

OK, so you know what these mad Russians do?

They rush out of the nice warm water and throw themselves into the snow!

And this is supposed to be healthy.
