George Heath published little during his short lifetime - just two slim volumes of verse: Preludes (the title later changed to Simple Poems) in 1865 and Heart Strains in 1866. After the poet’s death, his friends produced a memorial edition of his work which was published in 1870. A second edition was printed ten years later.

The two editions of The Poems of George Heath, The Moorland Poet are available on this site, to read online or download. Although the later edition includes extra material, it also omits one poem and a few lines from another. I have detailed the major changes on a separate page.

I have also included a facsimile edition of Heart Strains on the site.

The Additional Poems page contains the two poems quoted in Francis Redfern’s Memoir and “Lines on the Cattle Plague”, which was published in Heart Strains but was not included in the Memorial edition.

Finally, as an introduction to George Heath’s work, I have added a page containing a selection of his shorter poems.
