2001 Review

2001 was a disappointing season.  McLaren had expected to win at least one of the championships.  They never came close.

In fact they were fighting more with BMW Williams for the second spot, rather than Ferrari for the first spot.  As with many other poorly performing teams there was no specific problem, which means no soloution.

Hakkinen looked as if he had lost all motivation, it was his worst season for four years.  He took the decision to take a year out.  Many believe that this will become permanent if there isn't a competitive team to come back to.

McLaren have Raikkonen on a long term contract, and Coulthard looks like he's going nowhere.  So unless McLaren offload someone Hakkinen wont be driving for them next year.
