The Maggie and Albert Lawrie family - The family members still resident in Earlsferry are Maggie,Albert, and Morag the MD. We have two sons - Michael, the older one, lives in Sussex with Janice. His two children, Emily and John live with their Mum, Michael's first wife Jenny, also in Sussex. Our other son, Iain, lives in Aberdeenshire with Jackie and their two children, Hazel and Catriona. Emily, John, Hazel and Catriona, our grandchildren, are collectively known as 'The Troops'. More about the 'troops' later.
Let us have a closer look at Maggie. Before becoming a mother Maggie worked as a civil servant, in Edinburgh with the Post Office. She operated an early kind of computer that was the size of an aircraft hanger, and came with tea and coffee facilities attached apparently. Since 1963,when we came back to live in Fife she has, brought up our two boys, and made a good job of it I might add, worked in various local jobs, and managed to become a mean golfer at the same time. In 1987 she started running her own small business manufacturing Scottish gifts, so the golf had to be been sidelined. However she had to give up the gift business due to problems with her sight, and has now taken up the 'gowf' again. Her putting is improving slowly.
Maggie has always lived in Earlsferry. Just recently we decided to try to trace her ancestors that had lived in the village, and we were able to go back to 1781. We did find one slight 'blip' though. Maggies Great Grandmother was born in, how do I put this -oh just go for it - born in England. However it is thought that GGm may have had French parents. I will try to verify this.
The next bit is about me, Albert. Thats it. No I have to be a bit more specific I have been told. I am from Aberdeenshire originally, but I have lived in Fife since 1951. My ancestry can be traced back to 1710, mostly farming folk, from around the Leochel Cushnie area.
I am now retired after spending 50 years as a painter and decorator, interrupted only by my National Service. For anyone interested I was in the Royal Army Service Corps, as a clerk. It was brilliant! Aldershot, where I did my training, was nothing like 'Lad's Army, as seen on the television recently. Our Corporal's were 'normal', though I would say that our Sergeant was a bit of a 'plonker'. (Today's lingo).
We are getting used to not having a dog now, but both of us miss the 'walkies' that Bonnie insisted we go on- regardless of the weather!
Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2006. Since then we have been attending Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and just recently completed her radiotherapy treatment. Her treatment since diagnosis has been brilliant and for that she is grateful to the team at Ninewells. They are the 'tops'.
