Cid Highwind
He is a tough, but a warmhearted old pilot, who hasn't forgotten his dreams of being the first man into space. He has a tremendous knowledge of machinery, and he is the best there is when it comes to sea or air piloting. He throws himself in on any attack, regardless of the danger. He built the airship, the "Highwind", but it was stolen from him by Shinra before he had a chance to fly it. He gets it back eventually though. He also does actually manage to get into space at one point in the game as well.

Red XIII
Under his fearsome exterior is an old and wise intellect, far surpassing that of any human. He is a good close range fighter. He was originally one of Hojo's research specimens, but then you rescue him.
As you reach Cosmo Canyon, his hometown,you find out that his real name is Nanaki, and his grandfather's name is Bugenhagen. Nanaki has a very interesting past.

Cait Sith
Cait Sith is actually the black cat, and not the white mog. Cait Sith rides around on this huge stuffed mog which he magically brought to life. He always has his megaphone in his hand, and is shouting orders and creating stupid attacks. He is pretty unreliable, just like his fortune telling, especially when you find out that he is actually a Shinra Spy, and has been all of the time. However, the party lets him off, and as an apology, he sacrifices himself for the black materia in the Temple of the Ancients. Cait Sith No.2 takes over for him.

Yuffie Kisaragi
She actually comes from a long line of ninjas, although she may not look like it. She is one of the optional characters. She is extremely annoying in that she keeps stealing all of your materia and running off with it. Having said that, she is the youngest character in the game at 16 years old. She throws knives, boomerangs and her speciality, origami. She is a superb fighter to have on your side, you would be sorry to miss her. So if you want to fight her, you need to encounter her in one of the forests around the world map. Later on you can get the Leviathan summoning materia in the temple of Wutai, if you have Yuffie on your side. So all round, she is very useful, and even more annoying.Vincent Valentine
Another optional character, gained by opening the safe in the mansion and then finding him in a coffin downstairs. He is a former Turk. He decides to come along with Cloud, only because of his past connection with the Shinra Corporation. He uses his trusty gun. Although he may look weak on the outside, he is rather evil and powerful on the inside.
