Cloud Strife
He is the main character of the game. At the age of 21, he finds himself a mercenary in Avalanche, having been an ex-member of SOLDIER. His enormous sword can cut almost anything in two. He starts the game as a selfish fighter. He only cares about his missions. But he gradually becomes more affectionate towards his work mates. Unfortunately, he shatters when Aeris dies, and then is even more depressed when he finds out that he was a failed Sephiroth clone, and was never actually a member of SOLDIER, but the evil Shinra Corporation.

Aeris Gainsborough
She works as a flower merchant at the age of 22. She is rather mysterious, but still young and beautiful. She meets Cloud whilst selling flowers on the streets of Midgar. She decides to join him soon after. She seems more interested in the apparent love triangle of her, Cloud and Tifa rather than anything else. She is a very important character in the game, as it is her death that really inspires Cloud to go and kill Sephiroth.

Barret Wallace
He is a 35 year-old, and the fearless leader of AVALANCHE. A few years ago his arm was destroyed by the evil Shinra Corporation, leaving him without an arm. Fortunately it was rebuilt, except with a gun for an arm. This is the reason for his hatred of the Shinra Corporation, so therefore establishing the underground resistance movement of AVALANCHE. His wife died in an accident several years ago, and now he lives with his daughter Marlene. He curses a lot in the game, but this was because of his depressing past. He does also get much more affectionate for his surroundings, and others who know him as the game goes on.

Tifa Lockheart
She is a bar hostess and also a dedicated member of AVALANCHE, and she is just 20. She was also born in Nibelheim, like Cloud, and also grew up knowing him. She is always (or almost always) cheerful. She brightens people up when they are down. But don't let her charm and looks fool you, she can easily wipe out an enemy with her strong blows with her fists "of steel"! She does have strong feelings for Cloud, but she will never admit that she does.
She doesn't really play a very big part in Final Fantasy 7. When she discovers Cloud in a wheelchair, she stays by his side throughout the whole of Cloud's trauma. She brings Cloud back to health as when they fall into the lifestream together, he is reminded that he was once a kid.
