'Management Skills' is a title which covers a number of related subjects. Chris has experience of the following:PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL AND REVIEW.
Conducting effective performance reviews (whether as part of a formal appraisal process or not) is one one of the most powerful tools available to managers. It gives staff a sense of purpose, value and achievemnet. It is also very difficult to get right. Many managers confuse Appraisal with Assessment and the Appraisal process with the Disciplinary process. Chris will help participants clarify the differences, give them a range of options for conducting their reviews and, depending on the agreed duration, lots of practical experience.
COACHING SKILLS.
Reviewing performance will help managers and staff identify development needs, but that is not the end of the manager's responsibilities. They can help develop the appropriate skills and knowledge as coach to their staff. This is something that many managers find very difficult. Understanding the difference between telling and coaching is paramount. Chris will give participants a coaching model which will help them structure an effective coaching session, will improve their questioning skills and he will give them plenty of opportunities to practice the technique.
INTERVIEWING SKILLS.
A variation on the 'questioning skills' theme.
Beyond the ability to conduct effective performance reviews there are two other key interviews that managers need to get to grips with:
- Selection Interviewing: getting the 'right' person in the first instance should be left to chance; it should be a methodical, systematic process, recognising the legal constraints that exist. Chris will give managers an awareness of their legal requirements, a process for defining Job and Person Specifications, writing advertisements, preparing questions, preparing for the interview, and conducting an effective interview. At least one opportunity to practice!
- Disciplinary Interviewing; many organisations find themselves in front of tribunals because a manger has failed to comply with the company's disciplinary procedure. Getting this process and interview right is vital. Chris will work closely with your HR department to ensure that the right messages are getting across. He will give managers the necessary skills and practice to ensure that they are conducting effective interviews.
EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP.
Many managers are in their current positions because of their technical competenece rather than their managerial competence. Leadership training will give them the opportunity to explore their management style, its effectiveness and alternatives to ensure that they are getting the best out of their staff.
SUPERVISORY SKILLS
An introductory event, probably lasting two days, designed for new and recently appointed supervisors. It helps them explore their new role, what is expected of them and some of the skills they need to develop if they are to be successful.
