The Chislehurst May Queen Society was formed to retain the continuity of the Traditional Crowning of the Chislehurst May Queen on the Common on the first Saturday in May each year. The May Queen has a retinue of approximately 24 girls and we are one of a very few groups performing Traditional Maypole Dancing.
After the Crowning Ceremony during the summer the May Queen, Prince and Retinue attend various venues (i.e. Nursing Homes, Hospitals, School Fetes etc.) where they perform the Maypole Dancing.
The May Queen and Prince are not chosen but work their way up through the retinue. The eldest girl of the year of joining having the choice to be Queen or Prince.
