The "T.F." alludes to the fact that the 5th Battalion was part of the Territorial Force .

Edward Emerson Melly arrived in France on 20 Sep 15. He was promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to Captain, at which point he served as the Battalion’s Adjutant. At the end of the war, he was serving in the rank of Captain.

The Military Cross (MC) was awarded to commissioned officers of the rank of Captain or below and Warrant Officers for distinguished and meritorious service in battle. For additional acts of bravery, a straight silver bar was awarded.

A total of 2,885 Military Crosses have been awarded (including 294 bars and 16 second bars).
